A trio of adventurous Jamaican artists ? filmmakers Donisha Prendergast and Mykal Cushnie and film producer/musician Kelissa McDonald ? have set out for the Motherland, where they will spend the next two months exploring the continent and documenting their findings with the aptly titled docu-film 50 Days in Afrika. TALLAWAH: What do you want readers to know about 50 Days in Afrika? What are the primary objectives you hope to fulfil with this project?
50 Days in Afrika is a journey of self-discovery and business exploration. By immersing ourselves in the film industries of six Afrikan nations, we hope to uncover the importance of film in dispelling media images and replacing them with the historical context of Afrikan stories, how film can contribute to a nation?s economy, and identify lessons we can learn, as well as what we can offer in order to bridge the gap between Afrika and the Diaspora through the arts of storytelling and film.

What first inspired this epic journey to the Motherland ? and especially in the year of Jamaica 50?
Even in this, Jamaica's 50th year of Independence, there is a significant disconnect between Jamaica and Afrika. Today, Nigeria has overtaken Hollywood and is now the world?s second largest film industry. There are a lot of lessons we can learn from their success that we can put to practice in our own country.

Mykal and Doneisha, have you ever collaborated on previous projects? What was the chemistry like then, and are there any special expectations this time around?
Yes. Most recently a music video for Magnum K&Q of Dancehall winner Deep JahI, and one for Tarrus Riley. We also have an ongoing project with the children in Tivoli Gardens community, the TG Peace Club, where we use film as a means to empower the children and supply them with the tools necessary to tell their own stories. As filmmakers, we understand each other, and our goals are very similar. You can see this in the projects we have done. And what you can tell from that is that 50 Days in Afrika will not only be educative, but also inspiring and entertaining.

CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) ? Mitt Romney's presidential campaign is trying to stay on the offensive in the increasingly heated Medicare debate.

Romney and his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, are inviting discussion of their plans for the health care program that affects tens of millions of seniors, thrusting Ryan's budget plans into the center of the White House race.

Ryan crafted a proposal that would transform Medicare into a voucher-like system.

Romney's campaign also is trying to undermine one of President Barack Obama's greatest campaign strengths ? his personal likability. The Republican said Wednesday that Obama's campaign is fueled by "division and attack and hatred."

Ryan will face voters in the Canton, Ohio, area Thursday as Romney attends a series of private fundraisers.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are in Washington.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? Gamma-ray photons seen emanating from the center of the Milky Way galaxy are consistent with the intriguing possibility that dark-matter particles are annihilating each other in space, according to research submitted by UC Irvine astrophysicists to the American Physical Society journal Physical Review D.

Kevork Abazajian, assistant professor, and Manoj Kaplinghat, associate professor, of the Department of Physics & Astronomy analyzed data collected between August 2008 and June 2012 from NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope orbiting Earth. They found more gamma-ray photons coming from the Milky Way galactic center than they had expected, based on previous scientific models. Gamma-rays are electromagnetic radiation emitted during radioactive decay or other high-energy particle processes.

"This is the first time this new source has been observed with such high statistical significance, and the most striking part is how the shape, spectrum and rate of the observed gamma rays are very consistent with the leading theories for dark matter," Abazajian said. "Future observations of regions with less astrophysical emission, such as dwarf galaxies, will be able to conclusively determine if this is actually from the dark matter."

Nonluminous and not directly detectable, dark matter is thought to account for 85 percent of the universe's mass. Its existence can only be inferred from its gravitational effects on other, visible matter. The UCI researchers' findings could support its presumed presence at the center of galaxies.

The prevailing hypothesis is that dark matter is composed of weakly interacting massive particles, or WIMPs. When two WIMPs meet, they annihilate each other to produce more familiar particles -- including gamma rays.

Although the data interpretation seems to be consistent with dark-matter theory, the gamma rays could be coming from a source other than WIMP destruction, Kaplinghat noted. "The signal we see is also consistent with photons emitted by pulsars," he said, "or from high-energy particles interacting with gas in the galactic center."
