95% Pina

All Critics (60) | Top Critics (17) | Fresh (57) | Rotten (3) | DVD (1)

What the filmmaker has created is an inspired simulacrum - a jewel-box that contains more of Bausch's kinetic soul than film has any right to.

Crane and steadycam allow Wenders to get so close to the action that in the minimalist Caf? M?ller, one's illusion of being on stage is uncanny.

"Pina"is the best possible tribute to Bausch, and to adventurous image-making.

I watched the film in a sort of reverie.

Whether you're familiar with Pina Bausch's work or not, the new film "Pina" is a knockout.

So this is what 3-D is capable of when used for art rather than the commerce of hiking ticket prices and repurposing cartoons!

An exhilarating experience, both in its celebration of Bausch's groundbreaking work and in the thrilling way that Wenders captures it on camera.

It's not an overview of Bausch's career or a statement on her art, but a celebration of her work and the dancers who bring it to life.

This is a stunning film, a glorious homage to modern dance and one of its premier authors and the best justification of 3D technology to date.

With a breakout use of 3D for artistic rather than solely commercial blockbuster purposes, German director Wim Wenders gives extraordinary life to the work of choreographer Pina Bausch.

From the hauntingly beautiful to the scary, Pina Bausch's post-modern dance sparkles in 3D.

It's an enchanting film, one that makes you feel you are missing something dear if you don't dance or appreciate it as an art form.

An often exhilarating, lively, magical and breathtaking experience of Pina Bausch's art.

A welcome departure from the by-the-numbers fossilization in today's documentary deluge.

Thanks to 3D technology it's dance film quite unlike any other, which was filmmaker Wim Wenders' intention, and it's a transporting experience for the uninitiated and the cognoscenti alike.

...filmmaking as glorious music.

ESO Uranium, Fission Energy to begin winter drill program at Canadian property

EBR Staff Writer
Published 17 January 2012

ESO Uranium Corp and its 50% joint venture partner Fission Energy will commence a $2.76m, 33 hole winter drill program at their Patterson Lake South (PLS) property in Saskatchewan, Canada.

The winter drill program, a follow-up to the November drill program, will include Sonic and/or RC drilling, core drilling, and airborne and ground geophysics.

Project manager Garrett Ainsworth said that the encouraging results to date at the PLS property have warranted an aggressive exploration program for this winter.

"We believe that this program presents an excellent opportunity to locate the bedrock source of the high grade uranium boulders discovered in June 2011," Ainsworth said.

Clinton to visit Algeria soon: diplomatic sources (Reuters)

ALGIERS (Reuters) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will travel to Algeria in the next few weeks, two diplomatic sources told Reuters, a visit which would boost an Algerian government left exposed by the "Arab Spring" uprisings.

Algeria is the only north African state largely untouched by recent popular revolt in the region but its leaders face mounting internal pressure to embrace greater democracy before a parliamentary election scheduled for May this year.

A visit by the United States' top diplomat is likely to represent a powerful endorsement for Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the 74-year-old president, helping him face down critics at home.

One of the diplomatic sources, who both spoke on condition of anonymity, said Clinton would visit Algeria in February.

A senior State Department official said about a possible Clinton trip to Algeria: "The secretary has made no decisions."

Western governments have been critical of Algeria's record on democracy and human rights, but they also see it as an important bulwark against the spread of al Qaeda in Africa.

Algeria has been fighting a two-decade insurgency against Islamist militants on its own soil. It is also coordinating efforts to crack down on al Qaeda in neighboring countries, especially in the Sahara desert.

Under pressure from the revolutions which overthrew entrenched leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, Bouteflika last year enacted limited reforms.

He ordered the lifting of a 19-year-old state of emergency and promised to end state monopoly of television and media.

The authorities also transferred the task of supervising elections from the interior ministry to a commission of judges, and invited the European Union to send election monitors. But Algerian opposition groups say the reforms do not go far enough.

After talks in Washington last week with Algerian Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci, Clinton told reporters, "Algeria has undertaken very significant reforms, and we welcome those."

"We want to see Algeria having a strong democratic foundation that reflects the aspirations of the Algerian people. We commend the government of Algeria's recent efforts in that direction," she said.

Many stars seen blowing 'bubbles'

A project to spot the "bubbles" that young, massive stars blow in the gas surrounding them has come up trumps, finding more than 5,000 of the objects.

That increases the known catalogue of bubbles by more than a factor of 10.

The discoveries were made by citizen scientists studying images from the Spitzer space telescope, as part of the Milky Way Project.

The much-improved catalogue has been submitted to the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

One of the great remaining mysteries of how our Universe works is how stars themselves form in vast clouds of swirling gas.

Astronomers are keen to find star-forming regions, hoping to catch the process at various stages to better understand it.

Groups of stars form in clusters near particularly large stars, and one good hint of these stellar nurseries is the "bubble" that they blow into the surrounding gas - a bubble that can be seen in pictures taken by Spitzer's infrared camera.

Human intervention

But the task to find and list all the bubbles in existing high-resolution images taken by Spitzer is a daunting one.

The largest previous cataloguing effort was carried out in 2007 by a handful of US astronomers poring through the images with their own eyes; it came up with 269 bubbles.

This is really starting something new in astronomy that we haven't been able to do?

End Quote Eli Bressert European Southern Observatory

Automating the process with a computer algorithm is not an option, said Eli Bressert of the European Southern Observatory.

"To have an algorithm that can identify that kind of structure, no one can do it a the moment - it's way too complex," he told BBC News.

"You need two things: pattern recognition and the ability to judge, based on the other data that you've seen, what's good and what's bad - and that's what humans are good at."

Enter the Milky Way Project, which grew from the riotously successful citizen science project to classify and describe types of galaxies, Galaxy Zoo .

The new project invites the public to take part by sifting through images from the huge archive of data provided by Spitzer's Glimpse and Mipsgal surveys.

The task is simply to look for bubbles in the pictures and mark them. The same images are presented to a number of participants, making use of the "wisdom of crowds" to shore up the certainty of each bubble identification.

Nearly a half a million images have been sifted through by about 35,000 volunteers, with about a million different individual identifications made.

The result reported in the new paper: 5,106 bubbles - suggesting that our galaxy, as Mr Bressert put it, "is basically like champagne, there are so many bubbles".

The data represent a valuable road map for star-forming regions in the galaxy, but they also show an inexplicable trend: a dearth of bubbles just on either side of the galactic centre.

That is just one of the research directions that will come out of the project, Mr Bressert said.

"We thought we were going to be able to answer a lot of questions, but it's going to be bringing us way more questions than answers right now.

"This is really starting something new in astronomy that we haven't been able to do."

Shelton returns to co-host ACM Awards with Reba (AP)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Get ready for another dose of Blake Shelton as country's hottest leading man joins Reba McEntire again this year as co-host of The Academy of Country Music Awards.

The 47th annual show will be held Sunday, April 1, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Like Shelton, the ACM's Fan Jam also will return for a second year. This time Zac Brown Band will host the parallel event at the Mandalay Events Center.

The academy also announced Lionel Richie will host "ACM Presents: Lionel Richie and Friends ? A Lifetime of Hits," its annual television special taped the day after the awards and aired later on CBS. Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Kenny Rogers, Rascal Flatts, Martina McBride and others will join Richie on the show.

The appearance will continue country music's love affair with Richie, who is preparing to release a country duets album this spring called "Tuskegee." Most of today's top country stars have said recently that Richie is an influence and his recent appearances at celebrity events have drawn crowds of star-struck celebrities.

"Being a part of the ACMs is an honor," Richie said in an email to the Associated Press. "I am excited to share such an amazing evening with some of my closest friends."

Shelton was an easy-going foil for his good friend Reba last year in his first extended television appearance. It turned out to be a sign of things to come as Shelton rode his appearance on singing contest reality show "The Voice" as a coach later that month to a new level of popularity.

Sugarland hosted the new Fan Jam event and after party at Mandalay Bay in 2010 with occasional live remotes that appeared on the broadcast, including a duet featuring Jennifer Nettles and Rihanna. Zac Brown Band, known for its kinetic live shows, will be joined by special guests that will be announced later.

>> new hampshire with the presidential primary there. savannah guthrie is in manchester. good morning, savannah.

>> reporter: good morning, matt. mitt romney has a double digit advantage in the polls here. the other candidates fear an early sweep of iowa and then new hampshire would make him unstoppable. so the attacks are intensifying and striking at romney 's business experience. romney touts his experience as a ceo. now his rivals are trying to portray him as the kind of guy that would fire you.

>> thank you. bye-bye.

>> what do you say, did you get her?

>> she said she's with me.

>> reporter: in a mad dash of 11th hour campaigning that turned into chaos in one case.

>> there is a lot of congestion.

>> reporter: republican candidates monday piled on the frontrunner, mitt romney , who provided a huge opening, discussing poor service he perceived in the past from insurance companies .

>> uh i like being able to fire people who provide services to me. you know, if someone doesn't give me the good service i need i want to get somebody else to provide that service to me.

>> reporter: romney 's opponents were quick to pounce.

>> governor romney enjoys firing people. i enjoy creating jobs.

>> reporter: rick perry 's website had a custom ringtone.

>> i like being able to fire people .

>> reporter: born into a wealthy family romney raised eyebrows for saying he worried in his life about losing his job.

>> there were a couple of times i wondered whether i was going to get a pink slip .

>> reporter: perry delivered a blistering retort, ripping romney 's tenure at the head of bane capital.

>> i have no doubt he worried about pink slips -- whether he would have enough to hand out because of all the jobs they killed. i'm sure he was worried he'd run out of pink slips .

>> everything go to the people.

>> reporter: and a super pac supporting newt gingrich plans to air a 30-minute film on mitt romney 's experience.

>> a story of greed, playing for a quick buck. a group of corporate raiders led by mitt romney , more ruthless than wall street .

>> reporter: are you feeling momentum now?

>> i'm feeling energy on the ground.

>> reporter: john huntsman who bet it all on a strong showing here was eager to go on the attack.

>> if you like to fire people combine it with pink slips --

>> reporter: do you think he's out of touch or a flawed messenger?

>> i think the combination of some of those messages would strike a lot of americans as being not in contact. and would not encourage a lot of voters, i don't think.

>> reporter: not every candidate took the bait.

>> do you think that's a legitimate line of attack.

>> i'm not taking shots at him for that. capitalism is constructive as well as destructive. i think he's got a lot more about his record as governor to talk about than his record at bane capital.

>> reporter: romney tried to brush off the criticism.

>> i understand in politics people will take it out of context, make it something it's not. i have to be an adult and recognize it goes with the territory.

>> reporter: this morning the democratic national committee is using romney 's statement without context in a web ad . with romney so far ahead in the polls it may be a race for second place. on the other hand new hampshire is known for surprises. four years ago remember then senator obama was pulling far ahead of hillary clinton . she came back and won the primary, ann.

Facebook Business Cards: MOO Partners With Site For Social Cards ...

Printing company MOO, Inc. has partnered with Facebook to allow users to create customized business cards using information from their Facebook profile timelines, Mashable reports.

Pricing for the cards ranges from $15 for 50, to $60 for 200, though the first 200,000 users to sign up for the deal will receive 50 cards free of charge.

Facebook says they're excited about the joint venture and that the cards will take the social networking experience to another level.

"Timeline helps people tell their story on Facebook and feature the parts of their life that mean the most to them," Facebook spokesperson Jillian Stefanki said in a statement. "The MOO.COM integration makes it possible for people to take this same experience with them offline."

Similarly, MOO representatives are touting the initiative as forging the way into a new era of networking.

"It's clear that consumer habits of sharing business and personal information are evolving, and the lines between online social networking and offline business networking are not just blurring, but vanishing," Richard Moross, CEO of MOO.com, said in a statement.

Those interested in ordering the cards can head to the product website and authorize the company to access their Facebook page. The system will then pull information from users' profiles and creates drafts of the cards with current cover photos and profile images.

Users' names, employers, and current locations appear below the images, but all three lines can be edited to feature other information, according to MOO's official video tutorial. The reverse side of the cards feature a space for a quote, Facebook profile URL, phone number and email address.

For a more in-depth look at the new feature, view MOO's video tutorial included above.

Santorum, Romney Face Tough Scrutiny Ahead of New Hampshire Primary (ContributorNetwork)

ANALYSIS | Mitt Romney won the Iowa caucus by a mere eight votes, narrowly edging out a victory over a surprisingly popular Rick Santorum.

Romney's razor-thin victory came after attack ads sunk Newt Gingrich, his previous top competitor, in the weeks leading up to the January 3 voting. Shortly before placing a disappointing fourth in Iowa, the former Speaker of the House declared himself "Romney-boated," according to the Statesman Journal, and an analysis showed that 45 percent of all political ads airing on television in the Hawkeye State were attack ads aimed at Gingrich.

What sort of firepower are Romney and Santorum facing as the Republicans go for their second primary contest?

First and foremost, Newt Gingrich has declared gloves off against Romney in New Hampshire in retaliation for Romney's treatment of him in Iowa, says the New York Times. Romney, who was surprisingly unscathed leading up to the Iowa caucus and faced no attack ads singling him out, insisted that he was ready for the coming onslaught, reported The Hill.

The onslaught appears to be arriving, asserts the International Business Times, with Romney facing a relatively-unified force of his five remaining competitors. Even Democratic president Barack Obama's chief strategist, David Axelrod, openly criticized Romney after the Iowa caucus, claiming the frontrunner only won by having his political action committees "carpet bomb" Newt Gingrich with negative ads.

Businessweek reports that Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, Romney's top two competitors, are currently speaking out against the former Massachusetts governor in New Hampshire, with Ron Paul also airing radio spots criticizing Romney as a liberal. Rick Perry, who has returned to Texas after his fifth-place finish in Iowa, has also indicated his intent to "take the contest to Mitt Romney," says the Deseret News.

While Romney faces a barrage, so does his new rival Rick Santorum: The former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, now the de facto second-place GOP candidate, has faced negative campaigning from Rick Perry, Ron Paul, and Mitt Romney, reports USA Today. Newt Gingrich also criticized Santorum, according to Fox News, by claiming Santorum was inexperienced and had little depth of knowledge of true conservatism.

Santorum faced sharper attacks by former Republican presidential nominee John McCain, who recently endorsed Mitt Romney. The 2008 GOP nominee denied that Santorum was a fiscal conservative and mocked the former Senator's alleged penchant for earmarks, says Reuters. Santorum's use of government earkmarks is detailed in an article by the Huffington Post, which alleges that other Republicans in Congress dispute the notion that Santorum is a true conservative.

With rhetoric against both Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum heating up, possibly as the rest of the candidates realize they have nothing to lose by going negative at this late date, it stands to reason that the Republican primaries are about to show a lot more mudslinging leading up to the voting in New Hampshire. Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, and Rick Perry all stand to gain votes of Rick Santorum's supporters if they can make Santorum look like a nonviable candidate, and all four of the aforementioned Republicans can stretch out the primaries by denying Mitt Romney early victories in New Hampshire and South Carolina.
