Verizon lights up its 200th LTE candle, plans to double 4G coverage by year-end

You've come a long way, Big Red. For a network that launched a little over a year ago, VZW's LTE service is about to hit a high water mark, blanketing 203 markets come tomorrow's planned expansion to an additional seven territories. But the nation's top wireless dog isn't taking this milestone as a moment of respite; the carrier's aiming to double its current footprint by end-of-year 2012, boosting its tally to a potential 400-plus areas. As for the grand honor of being the 200th to come under the operator's 4G breadth, well, that distinction goes to a little town by the name of Dothan, Alabama. Sadly for those local folks, no festivities, fireworks or even service discounts are planned. Check out the PR after the break for the full list of cities joining the 700MHz brigade.

Road paved with toilets gets green credential

20 hrs.

If you take a stroll along a newly paved six-block stretch of downtown Bellingham, Wash., you'll be excused if you think you put your foot in a toilet. The sidewalk contains 5 tons of crushed potty.

The project is the first to earn Greenroads certification, a rating system that aims to do for roadway construction what LEED?did for the building industry ? make projects more sustainable.

"We have the know-how and the people and the technology to do roads better than we do," Stephen Muench, a civil and environmental engineer at the University of Washington in Seattle, told me. "The only thing lacking is the want to do it."

Muench led the development of Greenroads, which addresses a range of environmental and community impacts of roadway projects such as noise, pollution prevention and the use of recycled material.

The non-profit serves as a third-party rating agency to review projects submitted for certification, awarding ratings of Certified, Silver, Gold and Evergreen.

Recycled toilets
Bellingham's Meador Kansas Ellis Trail Project earned Silver certification for incorporating aspects such as porous pavements that naturally treat runoff, LED street lighting, and diverting 400 toilets from the landfill.

The toilets came from the Bellingham non-profit Sustainable Connections that received a federal stimulus grant for energy-efficiency upgrades to 400 units under the Bellingham Housing Authority that involved replacement of water and electrical fixtures.

Old toilets drain 3.5 gallons of water or more per flush. New water-efficient models use less than half that, which means more water for other uses and less electricity spent pumping it to and from the toilet.

When the non-profit replaced 400 water-guzzling toilets with ones that sip instead, they had about 5 tons of porcelain to recycle.

"They called me up and were like, 'Can you do anything?'" Freeman Anthony, a project engineer with the city of Bellingham who led the trail project, told me.

He contacted his concrete supplier, who agreed to crush the potties and incorporate the porcelain into their mixture.?

"Originally, we went 40 percent toilet by volume and that was a little bony, you might say, because they are jagged little pieces," Anthony said. "We backed it off to 25 percent and that seemed to be the magic number."

More green roads
According to Muench, 12 more projects are currently under review for Greenroads certification and another 10 to 20 are considering pursuing it.

He admits that's a drop in the bucket compared to the total number of road projects, which may be several hundred in any given state a year, but thinks the practices that earn certification will leak into roadway construction in general.

"Standards and regulations take a lot of time to get put into effect and when they do, it's probably not cutting-edge technology," Muench noted.

He's optimistic that Greenroads will slowly raise the bar of the standards, and that, regardless, engineers will strive to do better than the minimum requirements.

"We have a bare minimum for passing a class, but I sure would hope my students shoot for more than that," he said. "They do. And they are the same people who go out into industry."

Verizon Could Be Biting Off More Than They Chew With Their LTE Plans

verizon-4g-lteThere?s been more than a little bit of Verizon news making the rounds today, and on the surface, it all seems like good stuff. Verizon will cover 200 more markets with LTE by the end of the year? Awesome! The next iPhone Verizon carries will probably have LTE? Not exactly a huge leap there, considering a LTE-packing iPad will his Verizon shelves this Friday, but what the hell ? I?m in. But let?s take a step back for a second: how well their network will hold up under that kind of strain? Verizon wants to double the size of their LTE network by the end of the year, and in all likelihood will have a huge LTE flagship device in the form of the new iPhone. I don?t doubt for a second that Verizon will make good on their plans to expand their LTE network by leaps and bounds, but the carrier's recent LTE hiccups don't fill me with much confidence.

Ron Paul Wins Popular Vote in Virgin Islands GOP Caucus

Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was the clear winner in the U.S. Virgin Islands??Republican presidential caucuses, having won almost 30 percent of the popular vote. In a stunning reversal of past reporting standards, however, much of the ?establishment? press declared the victor to be Mitt Romney, who took only around 26 percent but ended up with more delegates.

The reason Romney ended up with more delegates ? he took seven, compared to Paul?s one ? is because after casting a ballot for a presidential candidate, voters in the Virgin Islands then select delegates to the national convention. Three delegates backing the former Massachusetts Governor and three Republican National Committee ?member pledge? delegates were selected for a total of six supporting Romney.

Only one delegate pledged to Ron Paul succeeded in being selected. And one uncommitted delegate announced he would support Romney only after he was chosen.??

?Although Dr. Paul received only one delegate, his team received up to three alternate delegate slots and will be well represented in our small delegation,? noted Virgin Islands GOP chairman Herb Schoenbohm in a statement after the unofficial results were posted online. Critics lambasted the process in a comment section under the statement.?

Nonetheless, despite coming away with fewer delegates, the Virgin Islands caucus marks the first clear triumph for the Paul campaign in terms of the popular vote. Out of 384 votes cast, Ron Paul took 112, or 29 percent. Romney received 101.

Rick Santorum, meanwhile, placed a distant third with just 23 voters ? or six percent of the vote. Newt Gingrich came in last with 18 votes, about five percent. Neither of the two candidates received any delegates.?

Analysts called the clear popular-vote win a ?moral victory? for the Paul campaign, while others said the press had ?buried? the real story. The liberty-minded doctor has been steadily accumulating delegates across America, but ? despite coming very close on several occasions ? had thus far failed to win the popular vote outright in any state.

The media has largely refused to report Paul?s significant victories in terms of delegate counts, even with good news for the campaign continuing to pour in. And in a wildly misleading article that differs significantly in how it was framed from past reports, the Associated Press reported that Romney won the Virgin Islands. Nowhere did the deceptive?report mention that Paul actually got the most votes.

?If the popular vote means you?ve won, then Ron Paul just won the U.S. Virgin Island Caucus. If collecting delegates equals victory, then Paul stands to do well there too,? the Texas Congressman?s campaign said in a statement. ?The media is trying to have it both ways with Romney and the Virgin Island Caucus while ignoring Ron Paul?s actual straw poll first place victory. Not that media duplicity is ever of any surprise to Paul and his supporters.?

In a video ridiculing the deceptive press reports about the results, popular conservative pundit and Paul campaign staffer Jack Hunter took "reporters" to task for misleading the public and concealing the truth. ?Here?s a little math lesson for you mainstream media folks out there,? Hunter noted. ?Admittedly, I?m not very good at math, but the last time I checked, 29 percent was higher than 26 percent.?

Hunter also pointed out that in every single primary and caucus held so far, the establishment press has reported the winner based on the popular vote count. However, despite the fact that Ron Paul has almost certainly collected far more delegates in multiple states than the popular-vote count would seem to indicate, the ?mainstream media? has consistently downplayed or ignored the campaign?s successes.?

?Any responsible journalist, by using the parameters we?ve used throughout this election, would be reporting that Ron Paul won the U.S. Virgin Islands Caucus,? Hunter said. ?But once again, when Ron Paul does win, they find all sorts of ways to ignore it ? this is just another example of that. Congratulations to Ron Paul on winning the U.S. Virgin Islands Caucus.?

Even big government-supporting Paul foes highlighted the absurdity of the situation. ?Something tells me the popular vote won't count in this one,? noted a blogger at the far-left Daily Kos website. ?I'm no [dedicated Paul supporter], but if they change the rules here it does say something. How can you read that Paul gets the most votes but gets 1 delegate, but Romney gets seven and not start to wonder if the fix is in???

And at Slate, a left-of-center website, David Weigel highlighted the bizarre reporting in a piece entitled ?The Virgin Islands Caucus: How Ron Paul Lost By Getting the Most Votes.? ?The headline doesn't match the data,? he wrote, pointing to the AP?s deceptive article. ?A pity for Paul.?

Over the weekend, Santorum was the overwhelming winner of the popular vote in Kansas? caucus, taking over half of the votes and more than three out of four delegates. In Wyoming, Romney was the victor, picking up seven delegates. Santorum reportedly took three, Paul earned one, while Gingrich had zero. Romney also won in the territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.??

On Tuesday, Mississippi and Alabama will hold their primaries. Caucuses will also be held in Hawaii and American Samoa.??

31 dead, dozens missing in Bangladesh ferry crash

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? A ferry packed with about 200 people capsized in a river in southern Bangladesh on Tuesday, killing 31 people and leaving dozens more missing, authorities said.

Local police chief Mohammad Shahabuddin Khan said about 35 people were rescued after the ferry sank on the Meghna River after colliding with a cargo boat early in the morning. Divers have recovered 31 bodies from inside the sunken ferry, he said.

He said the dead included a young woman found cradling her baby's lifeless body.

"The death toll is likely to rise as more bodies are feared trapped inside," Khan said. "We will get a better picture of the casualties once the sunken ferry is pulled out of the water."

Khan could not specify exactly how many people were still missing, but said "many of those listed missing are feared dead."

One of the divers, Mohammad Alauddin, said there were still bodies inside the sunken ferry, some of them buried under cargo.

Hundreds of anxious people, many of them weeping, gathered near the scene of the accident to look for their loved ones.

The MV Shariatpur-1 was traveling to the capital, Dhaka, from neighboring Shariatpur district to the southwest. The accident site is in Munshiganj district, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Dhaka.

Dulal Dewan, a survivor, described a scene of chaos as the ferry collided with the other ship.

"I was awakened with a big jolt," said the businessman, who was asleep on the top deck when the collision occurred. "I jumped into the river in darkness as the ferry started going down."

"In minutes there were screams all around," he said. "People were shouting for help."

Dewan said he was rescued by a nearby boat, but eight other family members traveling with him were still unaccounted for.

Estimates varied as to how many people were on board the ferry.

Khan put the number at close to 200, while Dewan told reporters that about 300 people were on board when the double-deck ferry sank.

It is difficult to get a reliable estimate as ferry operators rarely keep a list of passengers. Most passengers buy tickets once on board.

Abdul Gani Akhand, 75, was among the survivors.

"I was sleeping and I really don't know how I survived," he said, shivering as a rescue worker ferried him to a hospital.

An investigation has been ordered into the cause of the accident, said Azizul Alam, the area's government administrator.

Alam said rescuers located the ferry in water about 70 feet (21 meters) deep. He said a rescue vessel was trying to pull the sunken boat close to the shore.

Ferry accidents, often blamed on overcrowding, faulty vessels and lax rules, are common in Bangladesh, a low-lying delta nation of 160 million people.

Are Gay Relationships Normal? : Badge Society Blogs

Posted by Malik Trust Mar - 12 - 2012 0 Comment

A lot of people out there often tend to criticise people that are gay or lesbian, but actually gay relationships are just like any other relationship and they should not be criticised of should not be treated any differently. Taking a closer look at normal relationships will prove that gay relationships also have the same characteristics of a lot of other relationships. The fact that the features can be the same also means that gay relationships can work and just because they are between people of the same sex does not mean that the relationship cannot work out like the others. I have done some research into relationships between two people and I have been able to come up with the most important characteristics of any relationship.

I have come up with these basic yet crucial characteristics of a good relationship. It is easy to see that all of these features could be a part of any relationship. It does not matter whether the partners are gay or straight. This makes gay relationships just like any other relationship and should be treated as such. Yes gay relationships are just like any other and are very normal.
