Why USB Ports Could Be the Power Outlets of the (Very Near) Future

There's a lot to love about USB. The plugs are small and convenient. The cable can carry both power and data. Plus, USB is, well, universal. This is why USB is considered by some to be the future of electricity. Smart grids, more convenient storage, solar power—according to a new Economist report it's all easier with USB.

Open source needs more tech savvy lawyers, Linux Foundation says

To avoid legal difficulties when managing intellectual property for open source projects, more tech savvy lawyers are needed, according to the Linux Foundation.

Educating lawyers, however, is not the only solution, argued other open source insiders at the LinuxCon Europe conference in Edinburgh this week.

[ InfoWorld presents the Bossies 2013, the best open source software for clouds, mobile, developers, and more. | Track trends in open source with InfoWorld's Open Sources blog and Technology: Open Source newsletter. ]

Open source software adoption is outstripping the legal knowledge of parties involved in open source projects who have difficulty dealing with copyright, patent, licensing and compliance issues, said Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin. During the conference's opening speech on Monday, Zemlin said the open source community needs more lawyers who have an understanding of the technology and how open source collaboration works.

Having lawyers with a better understanding of the technology involved in open source projects would indeed be a way to overcome legal difficulties, said Deb Nicholson, community outreach director of the OIN (Open Innovation Network).

"I would agree that having more tech savvy lawyers that understand open source legal issues would be good," Nicholson said. "Smaller companies are desperate to find someone who can advise them," she said, adding that even if they can pay them, finding an attorney who understands the issues can be difficult.

The problem is that most free and open source software projects are becoming more legally complicated, said Catharina Maracke, a lawyer and associate professor at Keio University, in Japan, who focuses on intellectual property law and policy as well as standardization efforts for public licensing plans.

For one thing, open source projects often call for separate agreements for copyrights and patents, Maracke said. Copyright and patent issues are different, and this can cause communication problems for developers and lawyers negotiating related agreements.

Being a lawyer with a consulting practice herself, Maracke sometimes has trouble understanding what developers try to tell her, while there are similar problems the other way around, she said.

This lack of understanding can lead to friction between parties who are trying to manage intellectual property for open source projects, and protracted negotiations can drive up the legal costs, Maracke said.

Educating lawyers isn't the only option, though. To bridge the gap, standardization of legal terms could also be an important step, Maracke said.

While public licenses such asCreative Commons, the GNU General Public License or other free and open source software licenses have emerged as relatively easy-to-use standardized copyright agreements, more work can be done to make licensing easier, according to Maracke.

‘Korean Zombie’ says UFC needs to show more sensitivity toward Asians

Chan Sung Jung is a cult favorite among MMA fans for his courageous and aggressive fighting style. When it comes to issues he cares about, the featherweight contender is just as committed outside the cage as he is inside it.

Earlier this year, the “Korean Zombie” sent an open letter to Georges St. Pierre, in an attempt to educate and chastise the welterweight champ for wearing a gi to the ring before his fight against Nick Diaz that had the rising sun symbol – a symbol used on the World War II Japanese war-time flag. Jung pointed out that to many people in Asian countries, the rising sun symbol brought up memories of atrocities committed by Japan during the second world war and that using the symbol was akin to someone using a Nazi swastika.

Jung’s letter made a difference. St. Pierre issued an apology to those offended and the maker of the gi also apologized and decided not to take the gi to market.

Viewers of this season’s Ultimate Fighter may have noticed bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey wearing a T-shirt sold by the UFC that also features the rising sun symbol, on a Pride Fighting Championships T-shirt. In response, Jung has written and sent out another letter, this time to one of his biggest fans – UFC president Dana White – asking that the UFC be more sensitive to what the symbol means to Koreans and others.

Bleacher Report obtained a copy of Jung’s letter. Here’s an excerpt from it.

“We have decided to take the time to speak up for what we know is right, because we do believe this is something that UFC management should absolutely be aware of. Let's get straight to the point.

It's about 'Rising Sun Flag' outfits. And our point is that this design is the symbol of war crimes, and that every single item designed after this symbol of war crimes should be kicked out of the UFC, firstly for justice, and then for the company.

... Let bygones be bygones? Get over it? Unjustified invasion, torture, massacre, military and sexual slavery, medical experiments on living prisoners of war and many other war crimes scarred too many people. It can never be forgotten. This is a tragic history for all of us. Furthermore, the Japanese government never gave a sincere apology, and is even trying to justify and distort their dirty, nasty history. Still to this day, so many victims are dying in pain, heartbroken, without being properly compensated.

... I was happy because I thought we have succeeded in educating a chunk of the world on a very important issue, and that we no longer have to see that symbol of war crimes, at least around the Octagon. But a few days later, another UFC champion and the symbol of [women's mixed martial arts], Ronda Rousey was seen in that 'Rising Sun Flag' outfit. Two UFC champions wearing the symbol of war crimes! Don't you think this will be an awful example for our company, which actually does a lot of charity stuff for troops as well?

This sport, mixed martial arts, is growing very fast. And on the top of everything is the UFC. It's been crossing borders with great ease. The event was a great success in Europe, Australia and Brazil, and now it's time for Asia. As a fighter, I'm really excited and happy to see the sport growing, but I don't even want to imagine UFC fighters in those outfits, especially in Asia. A lot of furious, heartbroken people will boycott the UFC, leading to a loss of a lot of (potential) fans, which will end up leaving a very bad impression on the Asian market. I mean, can you imagine our fighters in Nazi outfits in Europe? For us Asians, it’s nothing different.”

The UFC indeed is attempting to grow in Asian countries and Jung brings up an interesting point. Does enough of Asia agree with Jung about the symbolism of the rising sun emblem that it could hurt the UFC’s reputation in countries like South Korea?

We don’t ourselves know the answer but we’re glad anytime a thoughtful discussion about history and society arise in sports. So far, the UFC has not issued a formal response to Jung’s letter.

If you’ve got an interesting take on the issue, let us know in the comments section.

Calif. Sheriff's Deputies Shoot, Kill 13-Year-Old

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California community is anguished over the fatal police shooting of a popular, 13-year-old boy who had been carrying a pellet gun that looked like an assault rifle.

Sonoma County sheriff's deputies had repeatedly asked the boy, Andy Lopez, to drop the weapon, but instead he raised it in their direction, police said at a news conference Wednesday.

Only after the shooting did deputies realize the gun was a replica that looked strikingly similar to a real AK-47 assault rifle.

Residents of Santa Rosa, a suburban town of roughly 170,000 people about 50 miles northwest of San Francisco in California's wine country, were shaken by the boy's death. Many expressed their grief by leaving candles, teddy bears and flowers at the edge of the field where the teen was shot Tuesday afternoon.

Some community members wondered whether the deputies acted appropriately when they decided to fire on such a young person.

"I'm sure you can tell he's a 13-year-old boy," Abrey Martin told KGO-TV. "He's not some maniac."

Andy, an eighth-grade student who played trumpet in his school band, was described as a bright and popular student, liked by many in his community, including Lawrence Cook Middle School assistant principal Linsey Gannon.

"Andy was a very loved student, a very popular, very handsome young man, very smart and capable," Gannon said Wednesday. "Our community has been rocked by his loss."

Even members of law enforcement expressed sympathy.

In a statement, Sheriff Steve Freitas said the shooting was a "tragedy" and that he would do everything he could to ensure the investigation was thorough and transparent.

"As a father of two boys about this age, I can't begin to imagine the grief this family is going through," he said.

After the deputies spotted the boy Tuesday, they called for backup and repeatedly ordered him to drop the gun, sheriff's Lt. Dennis O'Leary said in a news release. His back was turned toward the deputies, and they did not realize at the time that he was a boy.

According to the Santa Rosa police, the boy was about 20 to 30 feet from them when he turned toward the deputies with the gun and they opened fire.

A neighbor in the area, Brian Zastrow, told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat he heard seven shots.

"First, I heard a single siren and within seconds I heard seven shots go off, sounded like a nail gun, is what I thought it was," he said.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

At Wednesday's news conference, Santa Rosa police displayed the pellet gun, which resembled an AK-47 with a black magazine and brown butt.

Deputies also found a plastic handgun in the boy's waistband, O'Leary said. The deputies, who have not been identified, have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard after a shooting, he said.

The boy's family was back at their mobile home Tuesday night after identifying the teen's body, the Press Democrat reported.

Andy's father, Rodrigo Lopez, told the newspaper that he last saw his son Tuesday morning. He also said the gun was a toy that belonged to a friend of his son's.

"I told him what I tell him every day," he said in Spanish. "Behave yourself."

Trial starts; Is Detroit eligible for bankruptcy?

DETROIT (AP) — An attorney representing Detroit urged a judge Wednesday to allow the city to fix staggering financial problems through bankruptcy, arguing that without it nearly 65 cents of every tax dollar eventually would be gobbled up by debts and other obligations.

The extraordinary trial, expected to last days, brings the bankruptcy case to its most crucial stage since Detroit in July made the largest public filing in U.S. history. If a judge finds certain legal requirements were met, the city would get the green light to restructure $18 billion in debt and possibly slash pensions for thousands of people, the most controversial target so far.

Hundreds of protesters walked in a circle outside the courthouse with signs that said, "Bail out people not banks."

In his opening statement, attorney Bruce Bennett said he "could stand here for hours" to describe the "mountain of evidence" that shows Detroit is insolvent. Without relief, he added, 65 cents of every dollar in residents pay in taxes could be needed to address the problem, leaving little for everyday services for 700,000 residents.

"This is one of those cases where the data speaks very clearly and persuasively on its own. It needs no gloss," Bennett told Judge Steven Rhodes.

He was followed by a line of attorneys, representing unions, pension funds and retiree groups, who didn't seem to challenge the ruinous condition of Detroit's finances but zeroed in on a key test under bankruptcy law: Did the city negotiate with creditors in good faith before the Chapter 9 filing? No way, they said.

The judge stood to get a better view as Jennifer Green, an attorney for pension funds, used a screen to show months of emails and memos from state and city officials talking about bankruptcy preparation, not fruitful talks with creditors.

Sharon Levine of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees said talks between Detroit and its unions should have lasted months not weeks. Another lawyer, Babette Ceccotti with the United Auto Workers, said the bankruptcy filing was aimed at using federal law to attack pensions, which otherwise are protected under the Michigan Constitution.

"Chapter 9 was already a forgone conclusion" before the city last met with creditors a week before the filing, Green said.

Bennett, however, said emergency manager Kevyn Orr's team was cooperative and open to suggestions.

"The city created a data base, populated it with enormous amounts of information and did not withhold information to get an edge," he said. "The city did act in good faith in all of the negotiations. The negotiations were unsuccessful."

Detroit is being run by Orr, a bankruptcy specialist who was appointed in March by Gov. Rick Snyder. They will be trial witnesses, along with Police Chief James Craig and outside financial consultants.

Michigan's emergency manager law gives Orr wide discretion to operate the city, from hiring people to deciding how services are delivered. Many local elected officials, including Mayor Dave Bing, are on the sideline and have no role in the trial.
