2014 Volkswagen Golf GTD, 1-Liter XL1, Audi A3 e-tron: Car News Headlines

The Geneva Motor Show is drawing near, and the cars that will be shown are pouring out. One of the latest is the 2014 Volkswagen Golf GTD, a diesel-engined MkVII Golf that combines surprisingly good gas mileage with loads of torque.

Volkswagen carries the gas mileage goal to an even more extreme point with the XL1, now destined for production. At 261 mpg, the XL1 uses a combination of diesel and hybrid, as well as a highly aerodynamic body and very low weight.

Audi's A3 e-tron splits the difference, scoring about 157 mpg on the European cycle with a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric hybrid drive system.

Unfortunately, it's not yet clear if any of these cars will make it to the U.S.

You'll find all of this and more in today's car news headlines from around the High Gear Media network right here at Motor Authority.

NASA Seeks University Participants for Summer Rocket Workshop

?

?

WASHINGTON -- University faculty and students interested in learning how to build scientific experiments for spaceflight are invited to join RockOn 2013 from June 15-20 at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

RockOn 2013 is an annual workshop held in partnership with the Colorado and Virginia Space Grant Consortia. Registration is open through May.

"Now in its sixth year, this program provides the basics on building, testing and flying a science payload on a suborbital rocket," said Phil Eberspeaker, chief of the sounding rocket program office at Wallops. "This is an exciting first step for participants to gain hands-on experience in building more complex space experiments. The program provides students with a solid foundation on which to build a future aerospace career."

During the program, participants will work together to build experiment payloads to fly on a NASA sounding rocket predicted to reach an altitude of 73 miles. The flight will take place June 20, the last day of the workshop, weather permitting.

"The purpose of the program is to bring together university students and instructors, and introduce them to building scientific experiments for space flight," said Chris Koehler, director of the Colorado Space Grant Consortium. "We really get into the basics of building experiments, including developing circuit boards, programming flight code and working together as a cohesive team on space projects."

New York Times puts Boston Globe up for sale | Morocco World News

Feb 20, 2013 (AFP)

The New York Times, facing a difficult environment for newspapers in the digital age, announced Wednesday a plan to sell The Boston Globe and other New England assets.

The Times said in a statement that it has hired Evercore Partners to advise the company and manage the sale process. The company aims to streamline its assets to promote its own marquee brand.

?Our plan to sell the New England Media Group demonstrates our commitment to concentrate our strategic focus and investment on The New York Times brand and its journalism,? said Mark Thompson, president and chief executive of The New York Times Company.

Besides the Globe, the other assets up for sale are: Boston.com, The Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Telegram.com and GlobeDirect, the Globe?s direct mail marketing company. Also included in the sale is the company?s 49 percent interest in Metro Boston.

?There can be no assurance that any transaction will take place,? the company said in a statement.

11 killed in explosions in southern Indian city

HYDERABAD, India (AP) ? At least 11 people were killed and 50 injured Thursday in a pair of explosions in a crowded area of the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, officials said.

Federal Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said the bombs were attached to two bicycles about 150 meters (500 feet) apart in Dilsukh Nagar, a residential and commercial district. He said eight people died in one explosion and three in the other. He spoke to reporters in New Delhi, the Indian capital.

The blasts occurred about two minutes apart outside a movie theater and a bus station, police said.

"This is a dastardly attack, the guilty will not go unpunished," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said. He appealed to the public to remain calm.

Television images showed the injured being taken to nearby hospitals.

The last major bomb attack in India was a September 2011 blast outside the high court in New Delhi that killed 13 people.

Federal Home Secretary R.K. Singh said officials from the National Investigation Agency and commandos of the National Security Guards were leaving New Delhi for Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

India has been in a state of alert since Mohammed Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri, was hanged in a New Delhi jail nearly two weeks ago. Guru had been convicted of involvement in a 2001 attack on India's Parliament that killed 14 people including five gunmen.

Many in Indian-ruled Kashmir believe Guru did not receive a fair trial, and the secrecy with which the execution was carried out fueled anger in a region where anti-India sentiment runs deep.

Polish prosecutors to drop charges in CIA jail inquiry: report

WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland will drop charges against a former intelligence chief prompted by allegations that the CIA was allowed to run a secret prison in Poland for al Qaeda suspects, a major Warsaw newspaper said on Tuesday.

Human rights activists and lawyers for men who allege they were detained by the CIA in Poland say the Polish authorities are trying to stifle the investigation because it would become politically embarrassing if it led to trials.

The daily Gazeta Wyborcza first reported early last year that prosecutors looking into allegations of a secret CIA jail, and how much Polish officials knew about it, had raised criminal charges against ex-intelligence chief Zbigniew Siemiatkowski.

Government and legal officials have declined comment on whether Siemiatkowski has ever been formally charged. But several sources close to the inquiry contacted by Reuters last year confirmed prosecutors had drawn up charges against him.

On Tuesday, the same newspaper cited an unnamed source as saying the charges against Siemiatkowski would soon be withdrawn. "The decision ... has been taken by Krakow-based prosecutors," the newspaper said.

A spokesman for prosecutors in Krakow, the southern Polish city where the case is being handled, declined to comment.

Reuters last year sent Siemiatkowski written questions about whether he knew about or was involved in a CIA jail in Poland, but he did not reply.

Gazeta Wyborcza gave no sources for its report on Tuesday, but it is one of Poland's most respected newspapers and has a track record of getting access to information about the investigation into the alleged CIA jail in Poland.

Siemiatkowski ran Poland's domestic civilian intelligence agency at the time the secret CIA jails were alleged to be in operation, and left public office in 2005.

Adam Bodnar, vice-president of the Warsaw-based Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, said there was a pattern of hard-to-explain twists in the investigation, including the transfer of the case from the capital, Warsaw, to Krakow.

"All these decisions are so irrational from the point of view of the effectiveness of the investigation (that) it is realistic to assume there is some political interference," said Bodnar, who has campaigned for the case to come to trial.

The European Parliament and the Council of Europe have published reports saying the evidence points to Poland, along with several other countries, having hosted a CIA jail about a decade ago.

The foreign detention centers allowed U.S. intelligence to detain and interrogate suspected al Qaeda militants without the restrictions and safeguards set out in U.S. law.

Polish officials have repeatedly denied there was ever any CIA jail on their soil. The government, though, says it is committed to a thorough and fair investigation.

Former U.S. President George W. Bush acknowledged intelligence agencies were running a program of jails for al Qaeda suspects outside U.S. jurisdiction, but Washington has never said where or how they operated.

Microsoft quietly raises prices of Mac Office by up to 17 percent

News

February 18, 2013 12:59 PM ET

Computerworld - Microsoft has quietly raised prices of Office for the Mac as much as 17% and stopped selling multi-license packages of the application suite.

The move puts Office for Mac 2011 on the same pricing schedule as the new Office 2013 for Windows. The price increases and the disappearance of the multi-license bundles also makes Microsoft's Office 365, a software-by-subscription deal the company has aggressively pushed, more competitive with traditional "perpetual" licenses.

It's not clear when Microsoft raised prices. The oldest search engine cache Computerworld found with the new prices was Feb. 2, so the company boosted them before then, likely on Jan. 29, the day it launched Office 2013 and Office 365 Home Premium. Microsoft did not mention the changes to Office for Mac in its press releases that day, or otherwise publicize the move on its Mac-specific website.

The single-license Office for Mac Home & Student now costs $140, a 17% increase from the previous price of $120. Office for Mac Home & Business, an edition that adds the Outlook email client to Home & Student's Excel, PowerPoint and Word, runs $220, or 10% higher than the older $200 price.

The new prices are identical to those of Office 2013 for Windows, as are the percentage increases.

Microsoft has also disposed of the multi-license editions it once sold: A three-license package of Home & Student that cost $150, and a two-license bundle of Home & Business priced at $250. To buy three licenses of Home & Student would now cost a customer $420, a 180% increase, while two licenses of Home & Business would run $440, or 76% more than the missing multi-license bundle.

The price increases and the killing of the multi-license packs were clearly intended to steer consumers and small businesses to a pair of Office 365 subscription plans.

Office 365 Home Premium, which costs $100 annually or $10 per month, provides a single household license that lets subscribers install Office for Mac Home & Business -- the one that includes Outlook -- on up to five Macs; install Office 2013 on up to five Windows machines; or install any combination of Office on five PCs and Macs. Home Premium launched Jan. 29.

Office 365 Small Business Premium, which will run $150 per user per year, allows up to five installations of Office for Mac Home & Business and/or Office 2013 on devices owned by one employer. To equip a three-person firm with Office using the subscription method will thus cost the business $450 per year. Small Business Premium is set to debut Feb. 27.

If Microsoft had not raised the prices of Office for Mac and eliminated the multi-license offerings, number-crunching customers would have realized that the subscription plan was no bargain in many scenarios.

But the higher prices of the perpetual licenses -- the traditional buy-once-use-forever form of Office for Mac -- make Office 365 the better deal when deploying four or five of the allowed copies.

Microsoft faced the same pricing dilemma with Office 2010 on Windows, and raised prices of Office 2013 licenses to make them less appetizing when compared to the Office 365 "rent-not-own" plan.

Buyers can still find Office for Mac 2011 at the older, lower prices, however. Although Microsoft has boosted prices on its online store -- as has Apple's e-store, which also sells the suite -- other retailers have not joined them. Yet.

As of late Sunday, for example, Amazon.com listed Office for Mac 2011 for as little as $116 in a one-license download format, and for an even-lower $109 in the three-license "family pack" edition. Amazon.com's price for a single license of Office for Mac Home & Business was $176.

Office price chart

Office for Mac 2011's new, higher pricing makes Office 365 plans more attractive: If customers install four or five of the allowed five copies of Office, the 'rent-not-buy' Office 365 plans are a better deal.

Are you in favor of Gulf of Mexico fish farming?

The possibility of Gulf of Mexico aquaculture recently moved another step closer to reality. But the small step forward ? mainly just adding a few proposed rules for such fish farming ? caused fishers and environment to once again speak out against the proposal that they fear will unfairly compete against local fishers and pollute local waters.

To read the full story on NOLA.com, click here. The plan would make the Gulf the first region in the country to develop open-ocean aquaculture in federal waters, potentially reaping another 64 million pounds of seafood from the ocean.

Opponents to fishing farming often cite wide-ranging concerns about damage to the Gulf's environment, as well as the effect the industry could have on traditional fishing communities that have relied on catching and selling wild fish. But supporters say the industry could provide an alternative domestic supply to imported, farm-raised seafood.

Domestic aquaculture provides only about 5 percent of the seafood consumed in the U.S, according to NOAA.

The federal government has promoted aquaculture over the past few years as a way to address the growing amount of imported seafood needed to keep pace with demand in the United States.

Approximately 84 percent of the seafood consumed in the United States is imported, with about half of that from aquaculture farms in other countries, according to U.S Department of Commerce.

In 2009, the same year the initial Gulf council plan was drafted, aquaculture crossed the threshold of providing more than half of all seafood consumed worldwide, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

That means more than half of the fish and shellfish consumed globally is now raised by humans and no longer caught in the wild. In 1970, farmed fish only accounted for about 6 percent of global seafood supply.

Eye movements reveal reading impairments in schizophrenia

Feb. 18, 2013 ? A study of eye movements in schizophrenia patients provides new evidence of impaired reading fluency in individuals with the mental illness.

The findings, by researchers at McGill University in Montreal, could open avenues to earlier detection and intervention for people with the illness.

While schizophrenia patients are known to have abnormalities in language and in eye movements, until recently reading ability was believed to be unaffected. That is because most previous studies examined reading in schizophrenia using single-word reading tests, the McGill researchers conclude. Such tests aren't sensitive to problems in reading fluency, which is affected by the context in which words appear and by eye movements that shift attention from one word to the next.

The McGill study, led by Ph.D. candidate Veronica Whitford and psychology professors Debra Titone and Gillian A. O'Driscoll, monitored how people move their eyes as they read simple sentences. The results, which were first published online last year, appear in the February issue of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General.

Eye movement measures provide clear and objective indicators of how hard people are working as they read. For example, when struggling with a difficult sentence, people generally make smaller eye movements, spend more time looking at each word, and spend more time re-reading words. They also have more difficulty attending to upcoming words, so they plan their eye movements less efficiently.

The McGill study, which involved 20 schizophrenia outpatients and 16 non-psychiatric participants, showed that reading patterns in people with schizophrenia differed in several important ways from healthy participants matched for gender, age, and family social status. People with schizophrenia read more slowly, generated smaller eye movements, spent more time processing individual words, and spent more time re-reading. In addition, people with schizophrenia were less efficient at processing upcoming words to facilitate reading.

The researchers evaluated factors that could contribute to the problems in reading fluency among the schizophrenia outpatients -- specifically, their ability to parse words into sound components and their ability to skillfully control eye movements in non-reading contexts. Both factors were found to contribute to the reading deficits.

"Our findings suggest that measures of reading difficulty, combined with other information such as family history, may help detect people in the early stages of schizophrenia -- and thereby enable earlier intervention," Whitford says.

Moreover, fluent reading is a crucial life skill, and in people with schizophrenia, there is a strong relationship between reading skill and the extent to which they can function independently, the researchers note. "Improving reading through intervention in people with schizophrenia may be important to improving their ability to function in society," Titone adds.

Other co-authors on the study are Christopher C. Pack of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Ridha Joober and Ashok Malla of McGill's Department of Psychiatry and the Douglas Mental Health University Institute.

Burger King plans apology after Twitter hack

This frame grab taken Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, shows what appears to be Burger King's Twitter account after it was apparently hacked. Starting just after noon Eastern time on Monday, the fast-foot company's Twitter picture was changed to a McDonald's logo, and the account tweeted that it had been sold to rival McDonald's. (AP Photo)

Somebody hacked Burger King's Twitter account on Monday, posting obscene messages and changing its profile picture to a McDonald's logo.

The tweets stopped after a little more than an hour, and Burger King said it had reached out to Twitter to suspend the account. A Twitter spokesman did not immediately respond to a phone message left on Monday.

Burger King, which usually tweets several times a week, said it was working to get the account back up. Typical tweets promoted sales on chicken sandwiches, or asked how many bites it takes to eat a chicken nugget.

But just after noon EST on Monday, someone tweeted via Burger King's account, "We just got sold to McDonalds!" They also changed the icon to rival McDonald Corp.'s golden arches and the account's background picture to McDonald's new Fish McBites.

About 55 tweets and retweets followed over the next hour and a quarter, including some that contained racial epithets, references to drug use and obscenities. The account tweeted: "if I catch you at a wendys, we're fightin!"

Monday's appropriation of Burger King's Twitter account was a relatively mild example of cybersecurity problems, which are causing increasing concern in Washington and for industry. Media outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post have all said this year that their computer systems were breached, while several NBC websites were briefly hacked in November. White House officials and some lawmakers are pursuing legislation that would make it easier for the government and industry to share information on how to defend against hacking.

Burger King didn't know who hacked the account, and no other social media accounts were affected, said Bryson Thornton, a spokesman for Miami-based Burger King Worldwide Inc. Its social media team and an outside agency manage the Twitter account, but Thornton declined to say how many people knew the account's password. He said they hope to have it working again soon, and will post a statement on Facebook later Monday apologizing for the tweets.

Twitter acknowledged on Feb. 1 that cyber attackers may have stolen user names and passwords of 250,000 users. It said at the time that it notified users of the breach.

Competitors were sympathetic.

McDonald's responded on Twitter that it empathized with its Burger King counterparts. "Rest assured, we had nothing to do with the hacking."

"My real life nightmare is playing out" on Burger King's twitter feed, wrote Wendy's social media worker Amy Rose Brown.

How Google's PageRank Algorithm Screwed the Online Writer (and ...

Image of Vintage Corkscrew

In many ways, this century has mostly been a dark time for online writers.

Huh? You mean the Internet ? the most significant publishing revolution since Gutenberg ? hasn?t been good for writers?!

Yes. And no.

Here?s the thing, good content writers got squeezed out during the early days of Google?s PageRank algorithm. As I?ll explain later, the importance was placed on the page, which created a nasty race to the bottom as far as writer?s value was concerned.

Thankfully, Google has recently changed its tune, and the web writer is about to profit from that change like never before ?

And don?t miss the 20-part checklist on how to succeed in today?s Google rankings at the end of this post ?

Here?s what to expect in this post

In the last post in our Author Rank series I wrote about why writers and content creators should care about Author Rank (it?s not just because Hunter S. Thompson would).

In this post we?ll explore the early phases of Author Rank. You?ll discover:

  • Google?s original attempt at evaluating web pages with PageRank
  • The abuse of PageRank ? and the ugly consequences for the writer
  • Google?s response to that abuse (hint: their response rhymes with ?Amanda?)
  • A 20-point checklist on creating high-quality content in a new web era

Let?s go.

Google?s original scheme to evaluate content

Google?s PageRank algorithm attempts to judge the relevancy of a page by asking two questions:

  1. How many links point to a particular web page?
  2. How valuable are those links?

In practice, the theory is this: when you have two identical pages on training for a marathon, the one with the most links pointing to that page should rank higher in the search engines.

However, the quality of those links matters a lot.

If both pages have ten links pointing to them, but one of the pages has links coming from Runner?s World and the Ironman Triathlon, that page is going to be deemed more authoritative than the other.

In addition, a page with ten high-quality links could potentially outrank a page with 100 low-quality links.

In other words, PageRank rewarded keyword-rich content that attracted high quality incoming links. But this occurred in an era when competition and content on the web was relatively low ? and social networking sites were but a twinkle in the eye of the Internet.

The rules changed in the early 2000?s.

How to game PageRank (and the mutiny against the writer)

The problem with PageRank was that you could game it.

Bad marketers realized that all they had to do to attract links (and grow traffic) was create and publish horrible, keyword-rich content that was brief, unoriginal, and shallow ?

Then lazy marketers took it one step further ? they created even more content on other sites (blogging networks, content farms, or a string of web properties) and linked that new content back to their main site and pages.

Sites like e-How, HubPages.com and ChaCha.com ? and a million service industry blogs like doctors, lawyers, real estate and so on ? blossomed.

Rankings soared. Traffic blew up. And in this era, demand for ?content? (in the worst sense of that word) erupted.

Sadly, it was also a mutiny against the writer. In this scheme, the author didn?t matter. Just the content. The watchword was that content was king. But the throne was empty.

Publishers demanded volume over value, and so writers were in a pickle. Finding work was not hard, but finding meaningful work was. And finding work for more than fifteen dollars an hour was even harder.

Erin Griffith summarized the position writers found themselves in:

It?s much easier to hire an anonymous consultant or copywriter to churn out content sans byline. No one cares who those writers are as long as the content they produce is viewed as legit to the almighty Google.

And of course, Google allowed spam to run riot. Content farms, blogging networks, and other unnatural linking schemes cropped up everywhere.

Link building became a hot business as SEO consultants demonstrated they could get a website ranked by simply creating a mountain of cheap content.

True, there were those who were creating high-quality content with credibility, identity, and authority ? but there was so much noise Google needed to do something about the hot mess it had helped create.

And in February 2011, Google rolled out one of the most punishing algorithmic updates on the books ? an update that affected the ranking of an entire site, rather than just a page or section of that site.

Within days, entire content empires were leveled.

Panda eats, shoots weak content, and leaves

The update I?m talking about is called Panda.

And while Google?s Panda doesn?t eat, and will likely never leave, it did shoot bad content dead. The story goes that the update was named after one of the core engineers behind Panda.

To say that Panda pummeled the cheap link-building, content-farm model is an understatement. Within hours of its release, entire large sites were virtually wiped out of search engine listing existence.

  • AssociatedContent.com.
  • Sweet101.com
  • Encyclopedia.com
  • HowToDoThings.com
  • Answers.com
  • eHow.com

Keep in mind, these sites weren?t de-indexed (removed from Google?s database). Google just stopped artificially rewarding them ? which plummeted their rankings to the point of near obscurity.

Talk about a buzz kill. And it?s telling which large sites didn?t get punished:

  • WordPress.com
  • Squidoo.com
  • City-Data.com

Other sites that were not punished by Panda included Copybogger, Mashable, and Search Engine Journal.

On these sites, content is original, useful, and ultra-specific. Content is epic.

Your 20-point checklist for creating high-quality content

Panda wasn?t (by any means) a flawless update.

Some people felt they were unfairly punished. Others were just confused. In response, Google pointed webmasters and bloggers to their web writing guidelines.

Those guidelines boiled down to these rules:

  1. Care ? deeply ? about the quality of your writing, and about your audience.
  2. Go deep with original research.
  3. Share a never-before-seen interview.
  4. Avoid redundant, duplicated, or stolen content.
  5. Build so much trust with your audience that people would be happy to hand over their credit card.
  6. Build your authority ? and your site?s authority.
  7. Spell correctly.
  8. Fix factual errors.
  9. Repair bad grammar.
  10. Write for humans ? not machines.
  11. Create something nobody has ever seen before.
  12. Remain balanced and worthy of your audience?s trust.
  13. Cover a topic comprehensively (don?t aim for an arbitrary word count and stop once you reach it).
  14. Avoid the obvious. If thirty people have already reported on the Facebook Graph Search, then find something else to write about (unless you have information nobody else does).
  15. Create something strangers want to share and bookmark.
  16. Don?t overuse promotions, calls-to-action, and ads.
  17. Write something a good magazine or journal would print.
  18. Steer clear of short and useless.
  19. Spend an insane amount of time on detail.
  20. Create something people want to talk about (preferably positively).

If you want to take your content creation to the next level, use the above points as a checklist before you publish your content. Run every single article through it. In fact, print this list out and tape it next to your desk.

Remember, the web needs content. Useful, original, and ultra-specific content.

Over to you ?

The good news is that if you?re an exceptional web writer, then February 24, 2011 was your day.

Panda was a significant step in bringing you (the writer) back to the central position of ruling the content roost once again ? of running the show.

Fortunately, there is even better news for good web writers, which I?ll explain in our next post in this series ? 7 Ways Successful Writers Use Google+ Effectively.

Stay tuned.

Do you have any ideas to add to the checklist? Please share in the comments.

(And a gold star for those who picked up on my nod to Lynn Truss? phenomenal book ?Eats, Shoots & Leaves.?)

Iceland Latest Country To Move Towards Internet Porn Ban ...

It?s common knowledge that the Internet is primarily a method of delivering pornography to consumers at unheard of speeds, but that may not be the case much longer in Iceland. Lawmakers there are the latest working to put in place a firewall that would block citizens from viewing pornography online. Iceland isn?t the first Western nation to take a swing at 86ing Internet porn ? the United Kingdom has flirted with the idea in the past ? but a growing call among lawmakers suggests it might be the first nation that has an actual shot at passing legislation to make the Internet measurably less naughty.

According to poiltical advisor Halla Gunnarsdottir, the method by which Iceland would ban porn hasn?t been decided on yet, though several options, including a ?Great Firewall of China? inspired firewall have been floated, and legislators are confident they could find ways to keep porn off

?At the moment, we are looking at the best technical ways to achieve this. But surely if we can send a man to the moon, we must be able to tackle porn on the Internet.?

First of all, I think you might be underestimating how much porn your dealing with here ? about ?One Internet? full, by recent estimates. And for future reference, maybe let?s not compare one of mankind?s greatest technological achievements to preventing people from looking at boobs online. You?re not really in the same ballpark there, and honestly, you?re not even playing the same sport.

Still, the move isn?t surprising coming from Iceland, which has a standing ban on printed pornography, and as of a few years ago, outlawed strip clubs, which they said violated the right of women who work in them.

While the move ? and the momentum it?s gaining ? aren?t shockers, political watchers in the tiny, remote nation say it?s still unlikely that the move will find enough traction to be passed into law, so Icelandic perverts and the legions of digital fleshmongers who cater to them look like they?ll likely be free to carry on their business for now. But with legislators in the U.K. already calling on their own nation to look on Iceland?s proposals as an example of how to handle Internet porn, don?t expect this to be the last word on the subject.

Making Self Improvement Changes To Make You Happy

The first step in solving a self improvement problem is admitting you have one. Here are a few self-help tips to give you an idea of what you could try.

Stress is as bad for your body as a piece of cake, so take it all in stride.

Use wisdom and be modest in your life to the fullest. Learn from your daily experiences, and learn to recognize when you can?t control a situation. Modesty will serve you well. Wisdom can help you to make better future choices based on past experiences.

Seek out other like-minded individuals. This will create a reinforcing environment for meeting your goals and also help you avoid people who will bring you down with constant criticism.

Find something to read that you can turn to for encouragement. Some people find inspiration in the Bible, while others find that religious text inspires them.

Most employers are more concerned about the degree itself, they will care that you earned the degree and can do the work. There are only very few exceptions to this rule, like the higher end of the financial service sector. It is really more important to simply have a quality degree since it can provide you with many opportunities.

Identify the biggest obstacle that is preventing you from being successful. This is hard for a lot of people. If you succeed in removing some obstacles, you might get a clearer picture of what your future holds.

Increasing the positivity in your daily life is truly a matter of personal choice, and what you want for others will often appear in your own life, whether good or bad. The idea here is that you should act toward others with a positive attitude. Learning how to maintain a positive outlook can help you escape from the onerous yoke of negativity.

Use your time efficiently. The simple trick is to take more breaks during your work day. This might seem counterintuitive at first, but the truth is that more breaks give you a chance to relax and recharge yourself; when you return the work at hand, which improves concentration when you return to work.

Focus on changing just one issue at any given time. There may be several aspects of your life that you want to improve, but by limiting your focus to one item at a time, you improve your chances for success.

If you have had several consecutive failings, then you need to analyze the situation to figure out what the problem is. Find out how others who have similar expectations. You might need to be more realistic or gain the problem to be that you need to succeed.

A positive attitude can be a powerful way to grow your spiritual nature. Living life under the burden of bad or negative attitudes will continue to hold you back, and in fact, will undo all your personal improvement efforts. Instead, stay positive and tell yourself that having a good attitude will help you achieve your goals.

You can?t make everyone happy, and accept that you will never be able to please everyone. You are essentially responsible for your happiness; however, but this shouldn?t be at the expense of other people?s feelings. If you make sure that what you do is true to yourself and your ethics, you will be better prepared to develop yourself more fully.

You should always treat others with respect, regardless of who they are or what they are able to do for you.The way you behave toward others is highly indicative of your own character.

Stress can impede your mood. Stress can take both mentally and physically across our body.In order to achieve our goals, the stress in your mind must be destroyed. Take some time out of your day to sit down and reflect. Having a time to refresh can make you more peaceful and improve your self-image.

It is a good policy to compliment those around you when you notice something positive about them. Resist the urge to focus on the negative and instead speak out in kindness to others and you will find yourself being kinder to yourself, as well.

Your body?s level of health depends on how healthy your emotional state. Always remember that a sound mental state and a vigorous physical condition should work in tandem.

Make it a habit to constantly ask yourself what?s important in your life the focus of how you are still focused on it.

Always carry a way to write down any ideas that you may have at any time or location. Carry some kind of paper and a pen around with you everywhere.

A good thing to consider when it comes to personal development is, value your important things. You should try your hardest to prioritize what you consider important.

If you are depressed, try increasing the amount of complex carbs in your diet. Serotonin can lower if you don?t eat enough complex carbs in your diet. You can do this by eating more raw veggies, fruits, nuts, brown rice, whole grains and beans.

Set realistic goals that you can accomplish, achievable goals for yourself. If you find your weaknesses and work on them, you can work to eliminate them and become a better person.

Strengthening your faith and expressing love are two great personal development goals. Without love, it?s impossible to have faith. Make sure that you are never take your faith for granted. Remember to be good to others and make the faith you have mean something.

One great self improvement is doing things for the benefit of other people. You can strengthen your inner character by using self-sacrificing behavior, and gain some understanding about people who may be less fortunate. When you can balance sacrificing for others with meeting your own needs, you can become that kind person that you wanted to be.

You need to care for others unless you can care for yourself. No matter how far along you are in your personal development journey, allow yourself time to recover and rejuvenate yourself.

An important bit of personal development is to treat your body well. If you feel thirsty, say, that you need to eat or drink something, you need to correct that issue right away. Doing this will make your body treat you better in the road.

Humility is key. Everyone is a part of the world?s puzzle. You can learn something from everyone you meet. When you fully grasp this concept, you can truly open yourself to new ideas. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish and learn when your mind is open to new things.

You will make dramatic progress in your attention on positive growth and development.

Decide what it is that you want and take actions toward this goal. You need to create and implement a plan of action in order to realize your goals to make them really happen.

Failure can be devastating to one?s ego and self-esteem when working on personal development. Failure is simply another method of determining what have been losses in your weaknesses and what have been your strengths. In that sense, each failure needs to be something that you feel good about, as you have uncovered another piece of your personal puzzle.

There will usually be a difference in where you are in life, and where you want to be. You need to understand and embrace this before you can move forward. Until you acknowledge this, you cannot even begin to move forward as these goals will help you measure your success and keep you motivated.

Use these tips for a little while and write down any changes to your thoughts or behaviors. Realize that you can?t do everything right away.

Nexus 4 Wireless Charger hands-on

Nexus 4 Wireless Charger handson

Palm's Touchstone dock immediately came to mind when we first saw LG's Nexus 4 Wireless Charger last fall (now available for $60 in the Play Store). Both devices are circular, with a micro-USB port in back and a slanted front surface on which to rest the phone. That's where the similarities end -- while the Touchstone is cylindrical and uses a proprietary wireless charging system, the Nexus 4 Wireless Charger is larger, spherical and Qi-compatible. Another major difference is that Palm's dock uses permanent magnets to line up and secure the handset, and LG's accessory relies primarily on the friction / suction between a rubber ring and the glass back of Google's flagship phone. Design-wise the Nexus 4 Wireless Charger looks similar to a smaller Nexus Q cut in half, down to the matching recessed square connector cutout.

In the box you'll find a 5V 1.8A AC adapter (vs. 1.2A for the one supplied with the Nexus 4) along with a micro-USB cable (longer than the one provided with the handset). The manual warns to "use only the power adapter and micro-USB cable that come with your Nexus 4 Wireless Charger", but we didn't have any trouble with other USB power sources beyond longer charging times. We tested the dock with the Nexus 4, Droid DNA, Lumia 920 and Lumia 822 (with the optional Wireless Charging Cover) -- basically, LG's accessory provides the same experience as Nokia's Wireless Charging Plate ($50), which is also Qi-compatible. The $10 difference buys you a matching design and a spare USB power adapter and micro-USB cable (Nokia's plate comes with a proprietary AC adapter). It takes about 4 hours to fully charge Google's flagship phone using wireless power -- check out the gallery above for some action shots.

New Mexico: La Casa Vieja de Analco, Oldest house in America, Santa Fe, New Mexico 2_6

The Oldest House in the United States is in Santa Fe New Mexico?s Barrio Analco. The word ?analco? means ?across the water? in the language of the Tlaxcalans, the Indians who arrived from Mexico with the first Spanish settlers under the leadership of Juan de Onate in 1598. The Tlaxcalan Indians, who had come with him from Mexico, settled on this higher ground just above the Santa Fe River. Tree-rings date the house to about 1650. It could be as old as 1200s AD. It?s built on the site ruins of older Pueblo settlements which had been abandoned. The Tlaxcalans and Spanish who settled along the river probably followed the practice of the Pueblo people and used the land down to the river for farming.

This panorama was taken in New Mexico

This is an overview of New Mexico

New Mexico is a state located in the southwestern region of the United States. Inhabited by Native American populations for many centuries, it has also been part of the Imperial Spanish viceroyalty of New Spain, part of Mexico, and a U.S. territory. Among U.S. states, New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanics at 45% (2008 estimate), being descendants of Spanish colonists and recent immigrants from Latin America. It also has the third-highest percentage of Native Americans after Alaska and Oklahoma, and the fifth-highest total number of Native Americans after California, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Texas. The tribes represented in the state consist of mostly Navajo and Pueblo peoples. As a result, the demographics and culture of the state are unique for their strong Spanish, Mexican, and Native American cultural influences. At a population density of 16 per square mile, New Mexico is the sixth most sparsely inhabited U.S. state.
