Atera- 77 Worth St- 2 michelin stars

It was DH b? day today. I read about Atera in some magazine and decided to book it, since we both like innovative, gastronomic , experimental cooking. Thanks to A/ex concierge, I made the request for a table in July and promptly, in Aug ( since the restaurant only takes tables 2 months out), they got us a table for tonight, 9.30 PM. It was such a fantastic experience! Before the meal even started off, there were so many SNACKS!! ( 7 to be precise) , 10 main courses, then , 5 desserts and 2 petit fours.

Since I can?t drink currently, still managed to convince hubby to get the wine parings- which he?s glad he did, as he really did enjoy it and Alex is such a super talented sommelier.

Chef Matt, was very much around, working the kitchen and presenting the dishes to the guests. He was very friendly and open to chatting about the inspiration behind his food.

They only offer dinner service, this restaurant is best if done in a group of 4 (there is just 1 table for that), or a couples outing.

It was one of my favorite meals that I have ever had- and I highly recommend it to everyone to go. They are in the process of re-creating their menu and I can?t wait to go back in a few months, to see what the new menu tastes like.

It was worth every penny spent, and it was a really fun and enjoyable evening.

Like I told hubby- he may buy better presents for me, but when it comes to his b?day dinners- I totally rock !! ( Park Avenue Autumn, Au Passage Paris, Atera just to name a few).

GM pondering even closer Opel joint venture with PSA Peugeot ...

Opel Adam live on show stand - copper with white wheels and top

Let's face it, even when they go well, partnerships rarely go as planned. Almost eight months after General Motors spent $423 million to snag seven percent of Peugeot, we on the outside are still wondering what the plan is. When the tie-up was announced, the main benefits were listed as purchasing power and platform sharing, and only a month after that, a deeper collaboration was discussed that would involve development of a dual-clutch transmission and a small car for Latin America.

We don't know what's come of it other than a potential write-down and Peugeot continuing to take a beating, but Reuters reports that the first phase of the venture is complete and now the two companies are working on more involvement for the second phase. A French newspaper report says one option for advancement would be the two companies becoming 50-50 partners, with GM kicking in more money for the privilege of doing so. Neither side would comment, but according to one Reuters source, the options on the table have also included "selling Opel to Peugeot, buying Peugeot's automotive business or putting them all together in a new entity."

If Peugeot bought Opel or vice versa, that would make sense ? but only for the seller, who could wash his hands of the misery. The buyer would then have two poorly performing brands with deep structural problems, huge cash requirements and two national governments chaperoning its moves. We're not sure how the other possibilities mentioned could help Peugeot or Opel out of their quandaries, but we know something has to happen so it's likely we'll hear more soon enough.

Cardboard Children ? Kickstarter (Sigh) | Rock, Paper, Shotgun

By Robert Florence on October 14th, 2012 at 11:55 am.

Hello youse,

Having played exactly NO board games this week, because of work and Dishonored, I come to you empty-handed. I have no new board games to recommend. Your money is safe for one week. OR IS IT? I?ve spoken before about my mistrust of Kickstarter. I just feel icky and weird about it. I veer between ?Fucking Parasites!? and ?Oh coooool!? But my mistrust is making me feel like a party-pooper, so I?ve decided to join the rest of those idiots and back something. Join me as I take a look at some of the board games we could back right now on Kickstarter. And join me in making the leap. Let?s back a potential turkey!

SALEM

There?s not long left for Salem to reach its target, and I hope it does, because the designer looks like a lovely guy and he has a cat and a nice house and nice hair. The game?s theme really appeals to me, because we all know that HANGING IS FUN. Seriously, though, that theme is something different, and is the kind of thing that the ghouls I play games with could really get into. On the Kickstarter page, it?s been claimed that the game has been well playtested, and the rules are there for you to read. There?s a nice little video too, where you can see the dude?s cat and his sweet tattoo, and a little walkthrough of how the game plays. Hmmm?. Yeah. MAYBE I?LL BACK IT. Take a look. Yay or nay?

HEAVEN

Heaven is in here because I kinda feel like I should back something that I would ordinarily never back in a million years. I also feel like it?s in the spirit of Kickstarter to just help a person achieve their dream, if that person is passionate and the project really matters to them. Heaven seems to be a board game about travelling through Bible stuff. As the Kickstarter page says ? ?The cards and board tell you 90% what to do so its easy to jump in and play. Now you can have fun traveling through time in a sort of living Bible.? I?m a little bit worried about that 90%. I hope there?s something that comes with the cards and board that explain the missing 10% of the rules or we?re fucked.

Look, I?m not a religious guy. And I have zero interest in traveling through any Bible, living or dead. But there?s something so awesome about that page, and I feel like flinging some money in. This is my favourite part ? ?In development I was asked ?why camels why not sheep? so I?ll say it here. I decided sheep were not strong enough to hold the interest of boys in HEAVEN?s age group.? Exactly. Sheep suck.

Well, what say you? Please don?t watch the video, it will give you nightmares.

SEA HORSE RACE

Wow. There?s something lovely about seeing a family?s own board game on Kickstarter. I mean, that?s what this is, right? It?s a board game that a family made for themselves to play, with all the cruelty that families enjoy. Watch the video. This game looks like a SON OF A BITCH. There are parts of the board that can have you ?going round and round for the rest of the game? and squares that send you so far backwards that it?s ?almost like starting over?. This game looks like hell on earth. Maybe we should back it. Do you know what I mean? Maybe this is exactly the kind of thing we should back. How weird would it be to pay money to have our own copy of some stranger?s family?s board game? Like, a game THEY probably hate playing. How cool would that be? Listen, I?m trying to get into the Kickstarter spirit. Please talk me out of backing this, because right now it seems like a good idea.

Here?s the best part of the game, according to the creator. ?The best part of the game is it is never the same, you could be in first all the way through the game and end up last at the end. It could only be fifteen minutes or could last up to an hour and a half.? How honest is that? That?s the BEST part of the game? I think I NEED this.

PURGE: SINS OF SCIENCE

Hey, PC Gamers! Now we?re talking. A card game that plays like an RTS? Okay. Great art? Yes. Does it still feel like a gamble? Absolutely. Do we care? Yes, a bit. But it DOES look beautiful, and there are no fucking camels in it. The thing about card games like this, though, is that the proof of the pudding is really in the playing. These things NEED to play well. You can have a lot of fun with even crappy little combat games with cool miniatures and dice to throw, but with card games everything has to shine or you just want to fling the whole deck into the fire. This is a REAL risk, but the art is lovely, and it looks like there has been a bit of love and care put into this project. I dunno. Is this the one we back?

WHAT WE BACKING?

Yeah, I?ve just picked out a few for us to look at, but there are a lot more on Kickstarter if you want to take a look. I want to back something. Right now I?m leaning towards Salem, because the concept seems solid, the theme is nice, and the dude seems lovely. Is there anything I?ve missed? Are you backing anything? And if you?ve backed something in the past and have the game in your hands by now, do you regret doing it? How did it work out for you?

(Did you watch that video for Heaven? Holy shit.)

NEXT WEEK

If everything works out, next weekend is THE BIG ONE.

Next week ? CITY OF HORROR.

New USDA Nutrition Guidelines Could Help Children Reclaim Their ...

From The Huffington Post?..

Like many families across the country, mine struggles with obesity and related illnesses such as Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. The situation has been so bad that both my grandmother and aunt died relatively young due to heart attacks. My mother has already been diagnosed with type II diabetes and I have a teenage cousin who weighs 300 pounds ? a health risk flagged by his doctor.

Sadly, our family is not alone. It is estimated that close to 40 percent of Latino children are overweight or obese, putting them at higher risk of developing chronic diseases and being overweight or obese as adults and developing other complications, according to the U.S. Surgeon General. It is such an issue in our community that in a survey by the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children?s Hospital, Latino parents listed obesity (44 percent) over lack of exercise (38 percent) and drug abuse (38 percent) as the biggest health concern facing children.

The subject of obesity shouldn?t be taboo. We need to talk about its causes and what we can do as a society to address it because it is killing us. An example of a way to take action is regulating easy access to cheap junk food at schools. This is a vital step that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has taken by making healthy foods a priority for school meals.

In 2010, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act was enacted to provide healthier foods and beverages in schools. The law charged the USDA with updating nutrition standards for the National School Breakfast and National School Lunch programs. Hence, starting this fall, kids began to see more whole grains, fruits and vegetables in their school cafeterias. For example, a typical lunch is whole grain spaghetti with meat sauce, broccoli, fat-free or low-fat milk and kiwi. Another day, they may have a chef salad, whole wheat pretzel, cooked corn, baby carrots, low-fat dressing, bananas and fat-free or low-fat milk. It is an amazing improvement in school meals to protect our children?s health.

Access to healthy foods in our schools make a world of difference in the lives of our children. A study by the research and policy group Bridging the Gap found that overweight or obese 5th graders who lived in states with laws that restrict the sale of unhealthy snacks and beverages in schools are less likely to remain overweight or obese by the 8th grade compared to their peers in states without these laws.

Researcher helps make Sudoku puzzles less puzzling

Friday, October 12, 2012

For anyone who has ever struggled while attempting to solve a Sudoku puzzle, University of Notre Dame researcher Zoltan Toroczkai and Notre Dame postdoctoral researcher Maria Ercsey-Ravaz are riding to the rescue. They can not only explain why some Sudoku puzzles are harder than others, they have also developed a mathematical algorithm that solves Sudoku puzzles very quickly, without any guessing or backtracking.

Toroczkai and Ravaz of Romania's Babes-Boylai University began studying Sudoku as part of their research into the theory of optimization and computational complexity. They note that most Sudoku enthusiasts use what is known as a "brute force" system to solve problems, combined with a good deal of guessing. Brute force systems essentially deploy all possible combinations of numbers in a Sudoku puzzle until the correct answer is found. While the method is successful, it is also time consuming.

Instead, Toroczkai and Ercsey-Ravaz have proposed a universal analog algorithm which is completely deterministic (no guessing or exhaustive searching) but which always arrives at the correct solution to a problem and does so much quicker.

The researchers also discovered that the time it took to solve a problem with their analog algorithm correlated with the difficulty of the problem as rated by human solvers. This led them to develop a ranking scale for problem or puzzle difficulty. The scale runs from 1 through 4 and it matches up nicely with the "Easy" through

"Hard" to "Ultra-Hard" classification currently applied to Sudoku puzzles. A puzzle with a rating of 2 takes, on average, 10 times as long to solve than one with rating of 1. According to this system, the hardest known puzzle so far has a rating of 3.6 and it is not known if there are even harder puzzles out there.

"I had not been interested in Sudoku until we started working on the much more general class of 'Boolean satisfiability problems," Toroczkai said. "Since Sudoku is a part of this class, it seemed like a good testbed for our solver, so I familiarized myself with it. To me, and to a number of researchers studying such problems, a fascinating question is how far can us humans go in solving Sudoku puzzles deterministically, without backtracking, that is without making a choice at random, then seeing where that leads to and if it fails, restarting. Our analog solver is deterministic ? there are no random choices or backtracks made during the dynamics." Toroczkai and Ercsey-Ravasz feel that their analog algorithm can potentially be applied to a wide variety of problems in industry, computer science and computational biology.

The research experience has also made Toroczkai a devotee of Sudoku puzzles.

"Both my wife and I have several Sudoku apps on our iPhones and we must have played thousands of times, racing to get the shortest completion times on all levels," he said. "She often sees combinations of patterns that I completely miss. I have to deduce them. Without paper and pencil to jot down possibilities, it becomes impossible for me to solve many of the puzzles that our solver categorizes as hard or ultra-hard." Toroczkai's and Ercsey-Ravasv's methodology was first published in the journal Nature Physics and its application to Sudoku, appears in the Oct. 11 edition of the journal Nature Scientific Reports.

Blazing Ruso to make all in The Neville Chamberlain Standard at ...

Blazing Ruso to make all in Neville Chamberlain Standard at Perry Barr

After racking up a couple of brilliant wins over 480 metres, Blazing Ruso is out to strike hat-trick. He, however, needs to overcome a poor draw to accomplish the feat at Perry Barr, where he will be seen in the Neville Chamberlain Standard on Friday, October 12th.

The white and fawn dog is due to start from the fourth trap, which usually does not guarantee a clear passage. Yet, his fans have nothing to worry about, because the dashing hound registered last two victories from the same box.

After crushing Head Iton Eoin by a couple of lengths, the son of Ballymac Ruso continued the fine work to ensure a comprehensive win at the start of this month.

Despite a crowded run-up, he did not lose momentum, and always led the affair. Following a stunning effort, the P. Rosney-trained bagged the big prize by two and a quarter lengths.

It is very hard to look elsewhere, especially after Blazing Ruso?s two stunning acts. The dangerous hound is more than capable of producing good results consistency, thus the punters can take a chance on him.

Other participants are: Easy Rider, White Coat, Samar Suzy, Carraig Easy and Non Pasaran. The big race will be initiated at 20:21 GMT. The winner of this 480 metres race will get a prize of 200 pounds.

Samar Suzy gained reward for persistency at Nottingham, where she won a 500 metres event easily by three and a quarter lengths. A similar result is unlikely here, but she surely has a role to play tonight.

White Coat pays his keep at Monmore. His fresh form is a concern. Easy Rider runs well in the trials, but has yet not shown consistency at the top level. Carraig Easy was recently beaten by Blazing Ruso.

Non Pasaran?s latest effort was not too bad, as he finished second behind Bower Hawk. Nevertheless, expecting a winning effort from him does not look the way to riches.

Blazing Ruso is all set to cross every obstacle to reach the winning post ahead of all. Easy Rider is the main danger. Good luck to all the hounds.

Scientists identify trigger for explosive volcanic eruptions

Saturday, October 13, 2012

Scientists from the University of Southampton have identified a repeating trigger for the largest explosive volcanic eruptions on Earth.

The Las Ca?adas volcanic caldera on Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, has generated at least eight major eruptions during the last 700,000 years. These catastrophic events have resulted in eruption columns of over 25km high and expelled widespread pyroclastic material over 130km. By comparison, even the smallest of these eruptions expelled over 25 times more material than the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallaj?kull, Iceland.

By analysing crystal cumulate nodules (igneous rocks formed by the accumulation of crystals in magma) discovered in pyroclastic deposits of major eruptions, the scientists found that pre-eruptive mixing within the magma chamber ? where older cooler magma mixed with younger hotter magma ? appears to be the repeating trigger in large-scale eruptions.

These nodules trapped and preserved the final magma beneath the volcano immediately before eruption. Dr Rex Taylor, Senior Lecturer in Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, investigated nodules and their trapped magma to see what caused the eruptions. He found that the nodules provide a record of the changes occurring in the magma plumbing right through to the moment the volcano erupted.

Dr Taylor says: "These nodules are special because they were ripped from the magma chamber before becoming completely solid ? they were mushy, like balls of coarse wet sand. Rims of crystals in the nodules grew from a very different magma, indicating a major mixing event occurred immediately before eruption. Stirring young hot magma into older, cooler magma appears to be a common event before these explosive eruptions."

Co-author of the study, Dr Tom Gernon, Lecturer in Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, says: "The analysis of crystal nodules from the volcano documents the final processes and changes immediately prior to eruption ? those triggering the catastrophic eruptions. The very presence of mushy nodules in the pyroclastic deposits suggests that the magma chamber empties itself during the eruption, and the chamber then collapses in on itself forming the caldera."

The Las Ca?adas volcano is an IAVCEI (International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior) Decade Volcano ? identified by the international community as being worthy of particular study in light of their history of large, destructive eruptions and proximity to populated area.

Dr Gernon, who is based at the National Oceanography Centre at Southampton's waterfront campus with Dr Taylor, adds: "Our findings will prove invaluable in future hazard and risk assessment on Tenerife and elsewhere. The scale of the eruptions we describe has the potential to cause devastation on the heavily populated island of Tenerife and major economic repercussions for the wider European community."

Movie review: 'Chicken With Plums' an inventive dish | The Salt Lake ...

Violinist Nasser Ali Khan (Mathieu Amalric) confines himself to his bedroom to die, in the drama "Chicken With Plums." Patricia Khan | Sony Pictures Classics

Review ? ?Persepolis? duo brings visual flair to live-action tale.

The lyrical fantasy "Chicken With Plums" is, like the recipe for which it?s named, a meaty dish with sweet-and-sour overtones.

This is the first live-action film by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, the team who made the riveting 2007 animated film "Persepolis." Like that film, this one is adapted from Satrapi?s graphic novel and is set in her former home, Iran.

?

HHHhj

?Chicken With Plums?

A melancholy musician waits for the end in this visually stunning drama from the makers of ?Persepolis.?

Where ? Broadway Centre Cinemas.

When ? Opens Friday, Oct. 12.

Rating ? PG-13 for some drug content, violent images, sensuality and smoking.

Running time ? 93 minutes; in French, with subtitles.

But where "Persepolis" was a gritty memoir of a girl?s growing up modern in a land rejecting Western modernism, "Chicken With Plums" is squarely set both in the past and the fantasy world of a dying man?s dreams.

It begins with a renowned violinist, Nasser Ali Khan (played by the French star Mathieu Amalric), who has given up the will to make music. So he decides to go to bed and die there. Eight days later, he does. (This information is given very early in the film.) What Satrapi and Paronnaud show next is how those eight days proceed.

Each day in bed, Nasser Ali contemplates what led him to want his life to end. We see his loveless marriage to the sensible Faringuisse ("Pulp Fiction?s" Maria de Medeiros), who supports the family when Nasser Ali?s music cannot. We meet his imperious mother (Isabella Rossellini) and his aged music teacher (Didier Flamand), a master who praises his student?s technique but hears no soul ? no "sigh" ? in his music.

We also see the woman, Iran (Golshifteh Farahani), who gave him that sigh.

Satrapi and Paronnaud, in flights of cinematic fancy, also take the story forward past Nasser Ali?s death. We witness what becomes of his daughter, Lili (played as a jaded adult by Chiara Mastroianni), and his son, Cyrus (played by Christian Friedel, in a hilarious parody of American sitcoms). And, in Nasser Ali?s nightmares, we see his encounter with the angel of death (Edouard Baer).

Amalric, best known to Americans from "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and as the last Bond villain (in "Quantum of Solace"), gives a performance that leaps from the melancholy to rapturous. At the same time, he anchors Satrapi and Paronnaud?s magical visual range and an emotional journey that zips from ecstasy to tragedy and back again.

October 12th, 2012

The SNDCle workshop is off and running. The opening reception was held Thursday night in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a stunning museum with tributes to the world?s great rock artists. See for yourself on our opening day Designers from around the world descended on Cleveland Thursday for the annual Society for News Design conference. This year?s conference, hosted by The Plain Dealer, started with some events Thursday, and the opening reception at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

We?ll be feeding our dispatches from Cleveland on sndlive.tumblr.com, so check it out. Also, follow the #sndcle tag on Twitter to stay updated.

In an effort to bring the workshop attendees together more often, we are announcing winners of SND?s major awards. This morning, SND33 Best of News Design coordinator Josh Crutchmer announced the World?s Best Designed newspapers and web site.

Read about the other World?s Best designed papers and website:

? Soren Nyland talks about how Politiken maintains its unique voice.

? Creativity and teamwork at The National Post, with managing editor Gayle Grin.

? Go behind the scenes at The Grid, with creative director Vanessa Wyse.

? Read an interview with Peter Breul, art director of Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.

? Read an interview with Miranda Mulligan, formerly of the Globe, about BostonGlobe.com 2011 World?s Best Designed website. Read more here.

Before the workshop each year, the SND board holds one of its twice-a-year meetings. More than twenty board members gathered at the Cleveland Plain Dealer Wednesday, Oct. 10. Board members came from as far away as China, Argentina, UAE and California. Board members from England, France, India and Russia Skyped in.

The board?s job is to review SND?s direction, finances and endeavors, including workshops, competitions and publications. With the exception of our executive director Stephen Komives, it?s a board of tremendously devoted volunteers. They give their time and energy to try and bring the news design community together.

The focus of this fall?s meeting was education and training. Directors representing SND?s 21 regions hashed out a training plan for 2013 that will bring coding, video, mutlimedia, news design and creativity training all across the U.S. as well as to India, China and Lebanon. If you are interested in bringing SND training to your part of the world, reach out to your region director.

The board also talked about SND?s finances. In the last few years, the leaders of of the Society have built a lean, flexible organization, one that can navigate the challenging times we fave. Our workshops, office, competitions and publications are built to reach the most members with the smartest financial risk. We are also making a push to use technology in a much smarter way. The things that traditional drove SND are changing and SND is working hard to change with them.

Two actions the board took Wednesday to keep pushing forward are to establish a corporate rate so newsrooms can sign up to join SND and get the benefits of our discounted member training, book and network in a new way. Stay tuned for details. The board also approved a motion look for new ways to seek additional grant funding, something SND has done to a relative degree of success, but wants to do better.

Developers tout early childhood center being built in Gentilly's ...

Developers marked another milestone in rehabilitating one of the city's "big four" public housing projects on Thursday, holding a belated ceremony to tout construction of a new early childhood center among the mixed-income housing already going up along St. Bernard Avenue in Gentilly.

The $9 million building, under construction since August and slated to open some time next spring, will serve about 150 students and will be run by the national group? Educare Schools.

It's part of an overarching development, called Columbia Parc at the Bayou District, aimed at alleviating poverty by building not only housing but also retail, healthcare and school facilities.

More than 500 families already live in Columbia Parc, built on the site of the former St. Bernard Housing complex.

Developers are aiming to assemble more or less "cradle-to-college" educational opportunities in one neighborhood, which would begin with the Educare program, slated to be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. year-round. That facility will eventually stand within walking distance of a new building for Akili Academy, a nearby public charter school, and the new McDonogh 35 High School, slated to go up across St. Bernard Avenue in the next few years.

Educare's executive director, Portia Kennel, thanked the group's local partners -- Kingsley House will help support the program -- and promised a concerted effort to close the widespread achievement gap between middle-class and low-income students.

"We're not only going to narrow that achievement gap," Kennel said. "If you put your?child in this center as an infant, we're going to make sure that achievement gap does not even appear."

One continuing challenge will be funding the program. Gerard Barousse, chairman of the Bayou District Foundation, said he is counting on, in part, revenue from a deal the group is putting together with City Park to redevelop the park's golf complex. The foundation has promised to raise about $9 million for the project in return for a portion of the income generated by the course.

Additional money will come from the federal government's Head Start and Early Head Start grant programs for low-income children. But Barousse acknowledged that more work will have to go into guaranteeing the $2.5 million annual budget that Educare will need to operate.

"We're working to try to bridge that gap," he said.

Joel Parkinson and Kelly Slater qualify for the semi-finals at Quiksilver Pro France

There were hardly any upsets during the quarter-final stage of Quiksilver Pro France as Australia?s Joel Parkinson and America?s Kelly Slater successfully secured top honours in their respective heats that went down at La Graviere in Hossegor, France, on Thursday, October 4, 2012.

Parkinson got the better of Brazil?s Gabriel Medina in the third quarter-final to advance through into the semi-finals while bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival.

The fourth quarter-final saw Australia?s Kieren Perrow succumb to a mesmerising performance by Slater, being sent into a daze along with everyone else who witnessed the magic of the greatest surfer in history.

While the pulsing six-foot waves gracing the main event site since the start of the day had pushed a handful of surfers on the back-foot, Parkinson was able to tame the conditions exceptionally well.

Squaring-off with Medina in a one-on-one battle for the semi-final slot, Parkinson exuded confidence since the beginning of the heat and concluded with a perfect 10 off his first business-wave and following it up with an 8.83-point ride immediately to register a heat-total of 18.83 points.

Medina tried to offer some fight, but his efforts were just not enough. Scoring a 5.50 and 7.40 off his best-two waves, the Brazilian surfer finished with a heat-total of 12.90 points, which resulted in him conceding victory to his rival.

The fourth quarter-final was nothing more and nothing less than a Slater show, with the reigning 11-time Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Champion leaving both the crowd as well as his rival stunned in awe.

The 40-year-old Floridian collected a 9.93 off his first business-wave halfway through the heat and backed it up with a perfect-10 ride a few minutes later to get to a heat-total of 19.93 points.

Perrow scored a 3.83 and 2.13 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 5.96 points, resulting in a comprehensive victory for his rival.

?You know the waves are so good, that literally both guys can get two 10s out there right now, there?s that many good waves,? Slater said after the heat. ?I was throwing away better waves than I?ve had all contest, it?s just pumping. The color of the sky and everything came together, the wind, the swell and the tide was perfect for the size, it was really nice. These are some of the best beachbreaks in the world right there.?

Claiming a successful result in their quarter-final heats, both Parkinson and Slater advanced to the next stage of the competition to take each other for a place in the final.
