Homeopathic Complaints

Homeopathic remedies come in small bottles, neatly labelled. Now consider this experiment. Remove the labels from the bottles and try to decide by an examination of their contents alone which label goes with which bottle. It turns out, in our present state of knowledge, that there is no way to do this.

But there is no mystery. Homeopathic remedies are prepared by diluting a mixture of water and another ingredient to the point that it is astronomically unlikely that even a single molecule of the original ingredient remains. What explains the fact that it is impossible to tell the solutions apart and sort them into bottles is that the solutions are the the same: water.

Now homeopaths are quick to notice that, as a matter of fact, while it is true that each vial contains water, each sample of water has a distinct history. Each is arrived about by diluting different substances. What differentiates the contents of the vials is their history.

?

There are roughly two ways historical facts can make a difference to what something is. Sometimes historical facts confer status. And status can be very important. A penny is legal tender only if it is produced with the right authority. An object might be physically the same as an ordinary penny and, yet, still not be a penny. Or suppose I am able to copy your signature perfectly. No one can tell the difference. This doesn't make my scrawlings your signature. In order for something to be your signature, it has to be made by you.

Historical differences of this sort are not physical differences and so they won't serve any role in explaining the uses to which the items in question can be put to work in physical transactions with other things. To suppose other wise is blank superstition. Only one of the pennies in my pocket used to belong to my son. But it would be silly to suppose that this fact would make a difference to what happens, say, when I put it in a coffee grinder. Or, to give a different example, one wine may be blessed and another not. For certain purposes this might be very important. But it is obviously not going to make a difference to the way we will digest these wines when we drink them.

The other way for historical differences to make a difference is by leaving a physical trace. The fact that the trespasser stood at a particular place in the garden is what explains the existence, shape, and size of the footprints we see there now. The footprint wouldn't have the properties it now has if not for the occurrence of certain historical events. The footprint itself is a trace of these events.

Homeopaths are interested in historically-based differences of the second kind. After all, homeopaths are precisely interested in understanding why it should be the case that different homeopathic solutions have different effects on people and also why homeopathic solutions differ in their effects from ordinary water.

Homeopaths believe that the water in their remedies contains a memory or a trace of the molecules they once contained, that the structure of the water has been physically altered by the past presence of molecules in just the way that the ground in my garden has been physically altered by the man who once stood there.

This brings us back to where we started. No science, no method, no technology now in existence can discern any intrinsic difference in the contents of the different vials. It's all just water.

Of course this doesn't mean that there are no differences. Perhaps our science is simply too immature. (Indeed, one prominent scientist, Luc Montagnier, has recently begun to investigate causal properties of supersolutions.)

But even if that is so, we now have a very good reason to doubt that taking drops of different homeopathic remedies could be causally efficacious in curing ailments. Why? Because we understand very well, there's no mystery, about how and why ingesting food and other substances acts on the body. This all takes place at the rather mundane and gross scale of molecules and metabolic processes. Even if there is a hitherto-yet-undiscovered difference between homeopathic remedies and water, it's hard to see how it could be the right kind of difference to make a difference to our bodies.

Now questions start to abound. If homeopathy works, it works thanks to causal processes operating at a level that no one alive now, or at any other time, comprehends. How likely is it that these unfathomable processes operate through the mechanism of ingestion of a few macroscopic drops out of brown vials straight out of central casting's nineteenth-century apothecary? This is really counterintuitive.

It weds good-old-fashioned cause and effect with, well, with mystery. And anyway, given that there is no way of telling the difference between a homeopathic solution and mere water, given that we don't yet have the science to do it, what evidence do practitioners of homeopathy have for thinking there are such differences? How did they figure it out?

In any case, this is all moot. While it would be wrong to say that there is no evidence of the effectiveness of homeopathy, there is no conclusive evidence that homeopathy is more effective than placebo. This is is exactly what you would expect given the fact that homeopathic solutions are water.

Homeopathy is a theory and a practice. I believe the theory is untrue; it is certainly unsupported. And homeopathic medicines are, as far as we now know, causally inert.

Question: Does this mean the practice itself is ineffective? I mean the homeopathic practice of providing care to those who need care? To answer this question, we need to think again.

Getting Disaster Recovery Services Ensure Business Continuity Amidst a Disaster

Disaster is what we should all prepare for. Even if the worst scenario is not going to happen, it does not mean that we should not prepare for it. The truth is it is always better to be always prepared than not to be prepared at all especially when a disaster strikes. Experience has taught us that it always strikes when we least expect it to. So why not prepare for it so it will do minimum damage if there will be any at all.The great thing about getting disaster recovery services is the fact that experts are the ones that get to handle the preparation in case something happens. Since they are experts they will not leave anything out. They should be committed enough to see it through. It should be seamless so when disaster strikes, it will not make a difference to the operations. People will not even know that disaster has just passed them by.The reason why companies get disaster recovery services is because it is able to ensure the continuity of the business operations even in the midst of a major disaster. You can never tell when the next earthquake will happen or a tsunami or another flood or a hurricane. They fully understand the importance of being able to recover data as soon as possible. It is vital to the business. One thing is for sure, you should only get the services of companies who were already tried and tested when it comes to disaster recovery.

Temple Run for Android proves that 'free' can be profitable

Temple Run for Android, released Tuesday, gives new momentum to Imangi Studios' mobile game sensation. Temple Run has already made a fortune off of its (free) iPhone and iPad app. But how?

Almost all successful video games share one thing in common: They pair in-depth game play with stunning graphics. Last year?s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 combined player customization, varying?scenarios, tight?controls, and explosive visuals worthy of a summer popcorn flick. The game made $400 million on its opening day, selling 9 million copies in November alone.

But that cardinal rule of $60 Xbox games doesn't apply to iPhone and Android.?In the blossoming world of mobile games,?success?is much less predictable. Cutting-edge graphics are nice, but hardly?necessary. In-depth game play is often scrapped for a single, well-realized idea. And at least one app has made a fortune by giving away its app for free.?

Temple Run, developed by Imangi Studios? designer-couple Natalia Luckyanova and Keith Shepherd, hit 36 million downloads in February, according to the company. That?s 36 million downloads on just iPhone and iPad ? the game was released for Android on Tuesday. Temple Run features Guy Dangerous, ?just your average explorer,? running from a band of polygonal demon monkeys through an endless, twisting jungle path.

The objective is to collect coins, grab power-ups, and stay alive ? a call back to the days of the original Super Mario Bros. So how is a game with such a simple premise holding its own in the era of Modern Warfare 3, which has a six-hour story and 16 multiplayer arenas? There are countless iPhone games with simple premises and rudimentary graphics. What is it about Temple Run that resonates?

For one thing, games such as Temple Run are perfect in terms of the smart-phone mentality ? they?re quick, easy, versatile, and don?t take much thought. Whip out your iPhone, play for 30 seconds and go about your day, or sit on the couch and enjoy a longer session. This isn?t the case for Modern Warfare or other games featuring elongated campaigns, all of which require conscious effort and time.?

Guy Dangerous follows a singular path ? albeit, one that has more than a few twists and turns ? but nonetheless, it?s far from a 360-degree, 3-D view. Users only have to swipe left, right, up, or down, or slightly tilt their phones in order to grab coins in hard-to-reach areas.

Needless to say, the graphics aren?t superb. In fact, they?re reminiscent of Nintendo 64 games from 1996 (only at a higher resolution). Back then, fun meant collecting yellow coins and improving your score with each run. Temple Run capitalizes on the idea of simple competition ? there?s nothing better than informing your friends that you have earned the ?2.5 Million Club? badge (inspiring them to whip out their phones and play their way back to the high score). Runs take about one to two minutes, so it doesn?t take too long to snag 2.5 million points once you?ve got the controls down. It?s good, old-fashioned fun.

    A forecast ? from 3 million-year-old rocks

About 3 million years ago ? at a time when climate conditions paralleled those of modern times ? sea levels stood about 66 feet (20 meters) higher, new research indicates.

The height of ancient sea level indicates Greenland and the western part of Antarctica had no ice sheets, and the massive ice sheet covering East Antarctica, the "big elephant in the room," had also contributed, according to lead study researcher Kenneth Miller, a professor at Rutgers University.

For decades, there has been controversy around what it takes to melt the East Antarctic Ice Sheet ? which contains about 7.2 million cubic miles (30 million cubic kilometers) of ice, according to the British Antarctic Survey. This new research indicates that, about 3 million years ago, some melting of this ice sheet had occurred.

"Understanding how fast and how much the East Antarctic Ice Sheet can melt is really what we have learned most from our study," Miller said, adding that the results indicate certain parts of this ice sheet are more vulnerable than was thought.

    1. More science news from msnbc.com

      1. Grounded! 'Bird man' admits faking his?flying video

A Dutch engineer stunned the world with a video in which he is shown taking flight by strapping on a set of wings, running and flapping his arms like a bird. Now, he admits it was all a fake.

      2. Magna Carta makeover may remake Robin Hood
      3. Did belief in gods help lead to Mayan demise?
      4. Reality check on 'Hunger Games' tech

The estimate of 66 feet (20 meters) is important because melting the ice now on Greenland would raise sea levels 26.2 feet (8 meters); melting the West Antarctic Ice Sheet would raise it another 5 meters (16.4 feet). Since together these don't account for the difference, water that is now frozen on the East Antarctic must have been liquid 3 million years ago.

In this case, the past has relevance for the future. During the Pliocene Epoch, the status of sea levels 2.7 million to 3.2 million years ago, average global sea-surface temperatures at the time have been estimated to be about 3.6 to 5.2 degrees Fahrenheit (2 to 3 degrees Celsius) warmer than today. In addition, atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide ?the dominant greenhouse gas ?at the time appear comparable to those measured in 2011.

During annual climate talks, international climate negotiators have set an unofficial goal of cutting global greenhouse gas emissions to a level that would limit global temperature increase this century to 3.6 degrees F (2 degrees C), although scientists believe this cap looks increasingly unachievable.

Of course, sea levels won't reach Pliocene levels overnight, or even by the end of the century, but these results offer a hint at a distant future, according to Miller.

"This is telling us a lot about what is going to happen eventually, eventually meaning really more than 500 years (from now)," he said, adding that by 2100 sea levels are expected to increase by 2.6 to 3.3 feet (0.8 to 1 meter).

Miller and colleagues derived a more precise estimate of Pliocene sea levels than has been accomplished in the past by looking at sediment cores from Virginia, New Zealand and the Eniwetok Atoll in the northern Pacific Ocean. They examined the pressures on top of the sediments laid down at this time, as well as chemical clues to environmental conditions, including ratios of oxygen isotopes (atoms of different weights). The ratio of oxygen isotopes laid down in sediment changes with the volume of water locked in ice elsewhere on the planet.

Sea levels don't rise in immediately with air temperatures because water warms more slowly and ice takes time to melt. Melt water isn't the only contributor to sea level rise; water expands as it warms.

The study was published online Monday in the journal Geology.

French cops in shootout with Jewish killings suspect

Schools throughout France held a moment of silence in memory of the four killed in the Toulouse school shooting. Meanwhile, French police have launched a massive manhunt for the killer. ITN's Martin Geissler reports.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 3:20 a.m. ET: TOULOUSE, France -- A gunman suspected of killing three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school wounded three police officers in a shootout at a house in Toulouse, France, early Wednesday and said he was a member of al-Qaida.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said the man targeted in the raid was a 24-year-old man who had visited Afghanistan and Pakistan, and that he had shot dead the four out of "revenge for Palestinian children." He is also suspected by authorities of having killed three soldiers of North African origin last week.

Police sources told Reuters that another man had been arrested earlier Wednesday at a separate location in connection with the killings.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, campaigning for re-election in a presidential poll in five weeks time, has blamed racism for Monday's school attack. His handling of the crisis could be a decisive factor in determining how the French people vote. France has troops in Afghanistan as part of NATO forces.

"He claims to be a mujahideen and to belong to al-Qaida," Gueant told journalists in Toulouse, referring to the gunman. "He wanted revenge for the Palestinian children and he also wanted to attack the French army because of its foreign intervention."

Gueant, who said Sarkozy had been informed of the raid,?did not say how they had tracked the man down.

    Officer shot through door
He said that when police arrived at about 3 a.m. local time Wednesday (10 p.m. ET) to raid the house?"the wanted individual shot at the door." NBC News reported the police were members of an elite team known as RAID.

One officer was injured in the knee and another officer lightly injured in ensuing exchanges of fire, Gueant said. A third officer was later reported to have been hurt.

Heavily armed police in bullet-proof vests and helmets cordoned off the area where the raid was taking place, in a suburb?only about 2?miles from the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school where Monday's shootings took place.

The suspect's mother?was brought to the scene to help negotiate with the man, who was holed up in?the small apartment building in the leafy neighborhood.

"The suspect's mother... was asked to make contact with her son, to reason with him, but she did not want to, saying she had little influence on him," Gueant said, according to BBC News.

All French shooting victims shot in the head at close range, prosecutor says

A police source said the police could launch an assault if the standoff lasted for some time. "There are more and more people around, so this creates a dangerous situation," the source said.

The suspect inside the house said that he trained in the Pakistan and Afghanistan?and is affiliated with Forca lesa, an Islamic group dismantled by the French government. The group, which recruits young French to join the jihad,?is?considered?to be?dangerous.

    'No respect for life'
On Tuesday, hundreds of?police officers?had spread out across southern France in the hunt for the gunman suspected in three deadly attacks.

Authorities suspect the school killer was also behind two recent attacks in the same area on French paratroopers that left three soldiers dead and one seriously wounded. The victims were of North African and French Caribbean backgrounds.

Sarkozy described the killer as a "monster."

"There are beings who have no respect for life. When you grab a little girl to put a bullet in her head, without leaving her any chance, you are a monster. An anti-Semitic monster, but first of all a monster," he said.

Monday's incident was?the deadliest school shooting in the country and the bloodiest attack on Jewish targets in decades. Schools across the country held a moment of silence Tuesday to honor the victims, who were heading to Israel for burial.

Gueant described the suspect as "someone very cold, very determined, very much a master of his movements, and by consequence, very cruel."

Uncovering Rudimentary Factors Of Real Estate Buying | Electronic ...

Buying a home is quite simply, the largest purchase you will most likely make. It is important to know what you are doing in order to get the best deal that you can. You can score a great deal on a home in this market, you just need to know what you can do and what you can avoid to make that happen.

Check out your new neighborhood. See what kind of people live nearby, visit the grocery stores, and see if there is some sort of community organization. The more knowledgeable you are about the place you may be moving to, the better informed you will be to help make your decision. Ask yourself if you can see living in this neighborhood.

Do not let cosmetic changes, such as rooms that need to be painted, put you off from buying a home. Cosmetic changes are usually easy to fix and often do not cost much money. It is more serious issues, such as water damage or mold, that are costly and difficult to fix.

You should require a full disclosure and have a home inspection performed on the house. The seller can disclose information that they know about the home, but there could be many things that the seller may be unaware of and the professional home inspector will be able to find them and point them out. This could save you thousands in the long run. Consider explaining Miele Canister Vacuum for up to date info.

Pay special attention to upgrades that the property you plan on buying needs. Have estimates done and compare those estimates to the cost of the property and also its appraised value. It is important to know what you are getting into if you purchase a home that needs repairs or remodeling projects that you would want to perform.

When purchasing a home, put down at least twenty percent of the house?s selling price as your down payment. If you put down any less than that, you will usually be required to purchase private mortgage insurance (PMI). This fee is around half of a percent, which would be about $1000 a year on a $200,000 house.

If you need to make improvements on your home, do them as soon as you move in. Putting these improvements off invokes the broken window theory, where if you allow a window in your home to remain broken, the entire house will begin falling apart. Make the small fixes now to avoid the big fixes later.

The information in this article is a great place to start when thinking of strategies you want to use towards buying real estate. Remember that the tips in this article is only a portion of the information you can know about how to be successful in buying the real estate that?s right for you.

A basic -- and slightly acidic -- solution for hydrogen storage

ScienceDaily (Mar. 20, 2012) ? Sometimes, solutions for hard problems can turn out to be pretty basic. That's especially true for a team of researchers at the Office of Science's Brookhaven National Laboratory (Brookhaven Lab), where the solution for a hard problem they were working on turned out to be pretty basic?and also a bit acidic.

The hard problem they were working on was how to store hydrogen fuel. Hydrogen gas (H2) is a clean and powerful fuel, but it's also extremely light, which makes it difficult and costly to store. It's typically held in high pressure tanks, although researchers at another Office of Science lab recently found a possible way to keep it in naturally-formed frozen cages.

In a paper published March 18th in Nature Chemistry, researchers at Brookhaven Lab led by chemist Etsuko Fujita announced that they had found a safe and reversible way to store hydrogen under mild (and therefore hopefully much more economical) conditions, using a newly developed catalyst.

Their work began by seeing acids and bases in an unconventional way -- as potential carriers of hydrogen fuel. Students often learn about acids and bases as part of their science fair projects. The 'volcanic' reaction of vinegar (a mild acid) and baking soda (a mild base) has given many students an early interest in the sciences. That was true for Jonathan Hull, a lead researcher on the paper, who was intrigued by seeing a similar reaction blow the corks off wine bottles.

However, many acids and bases are actually watery solutions filled with hydrogen. In an acidic solution, the hydrogen atoms wander free. They're usually missing their electron too, which gives them a positive charge (atoms and molecules with either a positive or a negative charge are called ions). In a basic solution, the hydrogen atoms are usually connected with something else, a negative ion of some sort. And yes, when an acid and a base react with each other, they typically create something neutral, like water.

The catalyst created by researchers at Brookhaven Lab connects hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide, "storing" the hydrogen linked to (adduct to) carbon dioxide in a mildly basic solution. The reaction can be reversed -- and the hydrogen fuel released -- by adding a bit of acid. The entire process can be run, and easily reversed, in a watery solution under mild temperatures and pressures with no toxic byproducts, and at a faster rate than any previous catalyst.

As a consequence, Brookhaven Lab's new catalyst might be used in future hydrogen fuel vehicles, though additional testing will be needed to see if it can be economically scaled up to industrial production. It may show up in other high powered systems too -- time and technology will tell.

This new catalyst shows the best of the Office of Science and its labs at work: Researchers taking on truly challenging problems, and finding basic (and sometimes slightly acidic) solutions.

    Santorum courts conservative Christians

(AP) ? When a nationally influential evangelical leader gathered dozens of pastors at his home church to hear from a presidential candidate, he had a simple message: Rick Santorum is one of us, and your parishioners should vote for him.

Nearly a hundred pastors from all over Louisiana and from as far away as Texas and Colorado accepted Family Research Council President Tony Perkins' invitation to hear a personal pitch Sunday from the former Pennsylvania senator, who met with them in a private briefing before he addressed the more than 1,400 faithful who crowded into the sanctuary at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church.

"What we need to do in this country is to rebuild that culture of life and rebuild that culture of marriage and families," Santorum said, standing in a small back room as the invited pastors gathered in an informal circle wearing handwritten name tags. "No one else talks about social issues."

In speaking to the group and then spending more than an hour with the congregation, answering Perkins' questions from the stage where Baptist Rev. Dennis Terry normally preaches, Santorum was courting the religious conservatives who are keeping him in a drawn-out fight for the GOP nomination.

Mitt Romney leads the race for delegates but has long struggled to win over a conservative GOP base that still questions his flip-flops on social issues.

Religious conservatives helped propel Santorum to victory over Romney and House Speaker Newt Gingrich in recent primaries in Mississippi and Alabama and are critical to his presidential ambitions.

Many of the Christians who shouted "Amen!" and stood to applaud Santorum's comments on Iran and his pledge to repeal President Barack Obama's national healthcare overhaul are the voters who could help him win Saturday's Louisiana primary and upcoming contests in the drawn-out GOP race.

"I know what's in his heart. It's the fact that he's a Christian," said 69-year-old Vickie Raabe, a retiree from Central who has been attending another nearby Baptist church for decades and says she will vote for Santorum.

    What about Romney, the front-runner?

"I just don't like him," she said.

Implicit in many of the attendees' dislike for the former Massachusetts governor was a discomfort with his religion. Why does Valerie, a longtime worshipper who wouldn't give her last name, support Santorum instead? "Mormonism," she said, unprompted. "I don't believe that (Romney's) a Christian."

Many evangelicals say Mormons are not Christians.

Terry, the pastor at Greenwell Baptist, said in an interview: "I want to hear about (Romney's) true belief in Jesus. Mormons believe that Jesus is a created being... In the South, you know, we believe that Jesus is the son of God."

Santorum, who is Catholic, doesn't have that problem.

"I know Rick really well, and he is the real deal," said Terry, whose fiery opening remarks included an insistence that America is a Christian nation and "We don't worship Buddha! We don't worship Mohammed! We don't worship Allah!"

Perkins, the head of the socially conservative Family Research Council, can't officially endorse a presidential candidate, but he made his personal feelings clear. "I'll tell you this," he said, "I wouldn't invite just anybody to my church."

Perkins was part of a group of evangelical leaders who gathered in Texas earlier this year to select a conservative alternative to Romney, who one time supported abortion rights. They voted to back Santorum, but it wasn't immediately clear how their support could directly help him.

That's where the pastors ? and their churches ? come in. The field has narrowed, with Santorum winning in nine states and Gingrich losing in the South, his home region.

"I hope that you said something about that today from the pulpit that people need to be voting next Saturday," Perkins told the pastors' briefing.

At Greenwell Baptist, there was an intense focus on bringing faith into the public square ? and on making sure the faithful are engaged in the political process. Voter registration forms and "how to vote" guides sat on a table just inside the main entrance.

Santorum spent more than an hour answering mostly friendly questions from Perkins about his religion, his understanding of what it means to oppose abortion rights, and his positions on Iran and Israel.

"I don't believe life begins at conception," Santorum said, "I know life begins at conception."

Terry said he had invited all the GOP presidential hopefuls as well as President Barack Obama to speak at the church.

In his remarks to the congregation, Santorum steered clear of mentioning his rivals. But he told the pastor's briefing that Romney is "compromised on the issue of freedom" because of his health care record in Massachusetts and said Romney reduces the election to "management of the economy."

"If this is about management of the economy, we're going to lose," Santorum said. "This election is about bigger things."

Resume Cover Letter; Four Step Template for Success | Making a ...

    Article by Lanard Perry

A Resume Cover Letter is the ultimate salesperson. It will work tirelessly around the clock promoting you as the ideal candidate for any job that you apply for. Is yours up to the challenge of presenting you as the best suited candidate? If not you need to re-write it.

Fortunately, writing a resume cover letter is relatively easy. And although each letter should be uniquely different and speak to a specific position, a resume cover letter template can provide the framework from which to write them. Additionally, here are four steps to follow when writing a resume cover letter.

Step One ? get noticed. Start with the appearance of your envelope. Is it a generic, right out of the box, white business envelope; or is it one that reflects that it was especially selected; which is denoted by its? color, size, stock, weight and feel?

What about the font type and size? Business like fonts work best, verses script like fonts. Readers will read and better comprehend information when presented in easy to read formats. Conversely, they?ll set aside cover letters and resumes that don?t.

Step Two ? generate interest through the content of your letter. The most obvious place to start is by addressing your letters to a specific person. Even if it takes a week of research to find out the name of the individual who?ll be reading your resume it will be time well spent. Nothing?and I do mean nothing, will make a greater impact on the reader than your letter being addressed specifically to them.

Step Three ? make them desire to learn more about you. Once you?ve connected with the reader by way of steps one and two above turn their interest into a desire to learn more about you. You can do this by relating your interest in a specific position, followed by a short paragraph about your experience and accomplishments.

For example, you might say something like??I see from your recent ad in the Resume Times that you are looking for an experienced _______. Well, that would be me. I have over ten years experience as an ____ and have been recognized three years in a row as the ?_____ of The Year.?

Step Four ? turn desire into action. Here?s where you want the reader to do something active; to read your resume right away, to call you to learn more about your interest and availability, or set up a time for an interview.

Phrases like??I look forward to an opportunity to personally discuss my interests and qualifications??or, ?It would be a privilege to personally meet with you discuss my interest, and to this end I will call you Monday of next week to see when you might be available for a one on one meeting?

Summarily, although writing a resume cover letter can be a tedious chore, the reward is that a top notch letter can help you get noticed, create interest and desire and get you more interviews and job offers. However, if you aren?t up to writing the caliber of letter that you deserve you can always consider a professional resume writing service.

Are you unemployed? Need to find a job? Want to earn more money? Or maybe you?d just like to get more responses to your resumes and job applications. If so, click to discover how By The Letter.com can help.

SXSW and the Digital Future of Health Care ? Science Life Blog ...

    By Matt Wood

The South By Southwest Interactive (SXSW) conference is best known as an annual gathering place for tech geeks. Each year thousands converge in Austin, Texas, to schmooze with the digerati and attend panel discussions on mobile computing, social networking, gaming and whatever else is buzzing on the Internet at the time.

logo_sxswi_2012The world of health care IT has been largely absent from these conversations in the past. This year, however, spurred by the impending changes from the Affordable Care Act, skyrocketing costs and general frustration at the complexity of the system, creative entrepreneurs set their sights on health care in a series of SXSW discussions that looked at the digital future of medicine.

For the first time, this year?s conference included a dedicated health-and-education track. One of the first panels, featuring speakers from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the White House and NASA, addressed the role of prize competitions in solving science problems. Government agencies, along with nonprofit organizations like the X PRIZE Foundation, are sponsoring contests in which teams compete to solve complex scientific problems. This method of ?crowdsourcing? allows these groups to reach beyond the usual circle of researchers to find novel solutions to problems and target ambitious goals without large R&D investments up-front. One example is the current X PRIZE competition that will award $10 million to the team that can develop a Star Trek-like ?tricorder,? or mobile device that can monitor and diagnose health conditions.

Other panels fit more into the general entrepreneurial vibe of SXSW. One of the themes running through all of these discussions was the opportunity presented by the growing amount of data generated by electronic health care records, insurance claims and genetic sequencing. One such session, ?The Future of Digital Health,? featured startups building tools to help people track medical expenses, access their medical records on the web and post health questions online where experts can provide verified answers.

Generally absent from these startup-focused panels was serious discussion of privacy and risk of data breaches. But some tried to tackle privacy concerns and legal issues that arise when health care collides with social media. One focused on the role of online review sites like Yelp as more patients search for information online to choose a physician. This presents a particular quandary for physicians because they can?t respond to reviews publicly to challenge unfair claims and misinformation.

While consumers usually think of Yelp as a place to find out about restaurants and hotels, Vince Sollitto, Yelp?s vice president for corporate communications and government affairs, said the website was originally created to provide reviews of physicians. He said that while 80 percent of reviews on Yelp are positive, a seemingly unfair review could be countered by a physician through a private message to other users. He also suggested that physicians use Yelp to post information about their practice proactively to counter potential misinformation, much like Ves Dimov, MD, an allergist at the Unviersity of Chicago Medicine, suggested in a recent post about filtering medical information online.

There were also multiple panels on social networking and its tricky role in health care. During each of these discussions observers could sense a palpable frustration at why consumers can communicate so easily with each other online but can?t do the same with doctors and insurers. One panel even began with a physician, a representative from Aetna and the founder of a social network for patients acting out a scene in which a patient tries to email his doctor a picture of a suspicious-looking mole. The scene played on the comedy of the situation, complete with a plugged-in patient expecting his physician to diagnose him on a cell phone while a mysterious insurer lurked behind a curtain like the Wizard of Oz, deciding which claims he would pay.

Another panel addressed how pharmaceutical companies can overcome the ?creepiness factor? of reaching out to potential customers via social media. This was one of the more charged discussions, because while patients genuinely want to get information from these companies through social media, they also don?t want to feel that companies are capitalizing on their illness. As Alicia Staley, a cancer survivor and CEO of a cancer advocacy group told a representative from Sanofi-Aventis, ?Your business strategy is my life.?

Some of the better examples of how online media can transform health care came through the creative use of video. In a panel on how hospitals can use technology to connect better with patients, Angelo Volandes, MD, an internist from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, talked about a study in which he used videos to facilitate end-of-life discussions with terminal cancer patients. By watching videos of how different types of care would look, they felt better able to make decisions about how much care they wanted to receive. He now works with a nonprofit organization that produces such videos for other types of end-of-life care.

Perhaps the most positive example of entrepreneurs using the Internet to change the way Americans think about health came from an unlikely source. Feel Rich is a website created by music producer Quincy Jones III (son of the legendary Quincy Jones Jr.) that uses videos to promote a healthy lifestyle to urban teenagers. But instead of shilling products or gimmicky workout routines, the videos feature famous rappers such as Paul Wall, Fat Joe, Slim Thug and NORE showing off their routines to lose weight, eat healthy and stay in shape.

Wall and his wife talked about growing up in homes where they never learned portion control or how to shop for healthy food. The videos show how kids can incorporate dance into exercise routines and work out without fancy equipment or gym memberships. The site connects kids with fitness trainers who encourage them on Twitter, and the company is working with Michelle Obama?s Let?s Move campaign to promote its message.

If some of the entrepreneurs at SXSW seemed a little too focused on the moneymaking opportunities in health care, projects such as Feel Rich, Volandes? video study and the various prize competitions showed the kind of positive changes possible when creative minds apply themselves to health and fitness. SXSW has long been an incubator for groundbreaking tech ideas. Maybe this is the year one of those ideas makes an impact on health care.
