DefaultAndroid 4.1.1 Jellybean autocorrect does not work, please help!
I have Predictive Text and Spell Correct turned on, but it still will not autocorrect my words. All it does is display a list of words it thought I meant to type above the keyboard. ICS did this exceptionally well, why don't JellyBean do it at all?

I really don't want to have to flash ICS back onto my S3, but if there is no workaround or patch for this in the near future, I will be forced to.

I am very disappointed in the new OS upgrade, for more reasons than just this, but this is the most serious and prevalent issue. I would really appreciate any and all help you guys can provide.

Thanks,
Dan

Steak and Shake comes to Vienna - News, Sports, Jobs, Community Information - Parkersburg News and Sentinel - NewsandSentinel.com

VIENNA - A '50s diner with a modern spin.

That's how the managers and staff describe Steak and Shake, the newest restaurant to arrive in Wood County.

"I'm excited to be a part of it," said General Manager Brian Marshall. "It's a great opportunity and really a unique restaurant."

From left, Ashley Knight, Hunter Varndell, General Manager Brian Marshall, Weston McAfee and Hannah Rollins hold trays and stand in the back of the store on one of their last days of training in preparation for the store?s opening on Grand Central Avenue in Vienna.

Popular menu items include Frisco Melts (a patty melt with Swiss cheese and special Frisco sauce), the original steak burgers and hand-dipped milkshakes.

A team assembled from throughout the country helped for a few weeks to make sure operations would run smoothly for the grand opening Thursday on Grand Central Avenue at the mall. Residents were eager to try something new or visit the nearest one within an 80- to 90-mile radius. Other locations include St. Clairsville and Lancaster, Ohio.

The new restaurant offers a fast but casual experience, said Steak and Shake field trainer Margie Harner.

"This is a great opportunity for employees," she said.

Harner comes from Texas where she manages about 29 other restaurants and travels the country helping with store openings. She has been to Georgia and Colorado in the last few months.

Marshall graduated from Parkersburg High School and previously managed another local restaurant. He is eager to be a part of something new in his hometown.

"Everything is made fresh," he said. "It's good food served quickly."

Because the restaurant is new to residents, Marshall said he has stressed to his employees the importance of setting the bar high. He said he hired about 130 employees to begin operations.

"The biggest challenge for us is trying to impress everybody," he said. "We're setting the example for Steak and Shake (in the area)."

Harner estimated there will be no less than 50 cars in the parking lot for the first three days. Marshall said the restaurant is prepared for large crowds at Grand Central Avenue and the surrounding mall area.

Customers in Texas still ask Harner and her employees what a Frisco Melt is and try to order a steak dinner when they arrive, she said. The menu will contain the same popular items used in all Steak and Shakes across the country, but have a different look.

The hours in the beginning will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Marshall said the addition of breakfast will take place soon, after employees gain experience.

Harner said she was impressed with the community and the "small town" feel of the valley.

"That just doesn't happen in Texas," she said. "It's so big you just don't have the time (to get to know people)."

Headquartered in Indianapolis, Ind., Steak and Shake Operations, Inc. owns and operates the 487 fast growing locations. About 400 are company-owned and another 100 are franchised. Many locations are 24 hours, but it is unlikely the one in the valley will be, Marshall said.

Locations include Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Weston McAfee said working at the Vienna Steak and Shake will be his first job in the food industry. He previously worked in mechanic shops, among other trades, most recently being drawn to serving.

"I've never served before, but I'm liking it so far," he said about one week before the grand opening.

McAfee was among the employees tasting the food while training. He said he enjoyed the steak burgers.

Harner said eating the food at the restaurant never gets old.

Tony Greig passes away at 66 ? Cricket News Update

Following a brief battle with lung cancer, former England captain and cricket commentator Tony Greig passed away on December 29, after suffering a heart attack at around 1.45pm. He was 66, and is survived by his second wife Vivian, daughters Beau and Sam, and sons Tom and Mark.

Standing at an impressive 6 foot 6 inches, Greig was a familiar sight in cricket, both on-field, and off it, and his lung cancer diagnosis in October this year came as a great shock to the cricketing community. The first symptoms of the illness began to manifest themselves in mid-2012, when an unusually persistent bout of bronchitis led Greig to undergo a test while serving as a commentator during the Pakistan-Australia series in the UAE, followed by the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka.

Tests revealed a lesion in his right lung, and further examinations confirmed that the former all-rounder was suffering from lung cancer. Despite the suddenness of the diagnosis, Greig maintained an optimistic attitude, insisting that he aimed to fight the disease. However, the illness did not allow him to fulfil his usual commentating duties for Channel Nine during the Australia v South Africa series, and alongside admitting that he missed cricket greatly, Greig?s absence was keenly felt by millions of television viewers.

A former player, broadcaster, and cricket revolutionary, Greig?s passion for the sport saw him travelling all over the world ? born in South Africa, he moved to England for an international career in cricket, after which his involvement with the World Series Cricket revolution following Kerry Packer?s offer saw him moving to Australia, and taking up a position on the on the Nine commentary team ? a post he held until his death.

?World cricket has lost one of its great ambassadors,? Greig?s fellow former captain and friend Bill Lawry said, while speaking to ESPNcricinfo in regards to the tragic incident. ?Not only was Tony Greig captain of England, captain of the World Series world team, but he just loved travelling the world to places like Sri Lanka, India, England, Dubai, wherever it was played, Greigy would be there. He's well known right throughout the world, well loved and respected and cricket has lost one of its all-time greats.

?... He's been a great friend of mine for 33 years. We knew he was sick but we didn't realise it was going to be this sudden. It has shocked us all.?

Kiran Bedi suggests 6Ps plan to curb crimes against women - IBN Live

Former IPS officer and India Against Corruption member Kiran Bedi presented her 6Ps plan - Crime Prevention Plan within police, people (society), prosecution, politician, prison and press (news media and film industry) - on CNN-IBN.

Bedi said she is sure that if this plan of hers is implemented, police administration can be improved and crime rate can be brought down.

Here is the transcript:

Bhupendra Chaubey: Dr Bedi has come to our studio and she has worked out an agenda which she believes can be worked out. She has called it the 6Ps principle, why don't you tell us what should be done in these times, which can alter drastically the policing mechanism.

Kiran Bedi: This is called the 6Ps, 6Ps means crime prevention plan within police, within people because community has a very major role to play. So the people, the police, the prosecution; then comes the role of the politician, the prisons and the media, which is the press and press also includes the films, and then comes the jail. So it is the 6Ps and a J. So each one of them has a plan because you need a community plan. You can't have sons of mothers, who have no control over their boys. So you need social, primary education at the family level.

Bhupendra Chaubey: But do the police ever bother to think in terms of social changes, or providing these social changes, or values that you are talking about.

Kiran Bedi: Bhupendra, many good police officers have done community policing, who would go to schools and colleges. They would go to families; they are called community police officers, which is what we did in Delhi Police. We turned a police officer into a community police officer. So we turned them into community police officers of their respective beats. Now, when they went to their respective beats this is what they did... it was crime prevention, it was visible policing, it was fear of getting caught. Then it was watch and warning past criminals, we went to old criminals. You see, when a beat officer goes, he is walking his beat, he is building relationships. He is also preventing crimes because he is collecting intelligence. He is also visiting past criminals and doing rehabilitation.

Bhupendra Chaubey: Let me put it to you this way, would you say that a person who is a beat constable of a particular area, say if someone is looking after Mayur Vihar, the beat constable of that area should be a person who is familiar with each and every family?

Kiran Bedi: This is what we did. I wish you get 16 beat officers who have worked with us during Mr Marwah. Call them, they knew there people by heart. Because they were never pulled out of the beat, no matter what happened, and I have worked during Punjab terrorism, I have worked during Mizoram insurgency, and even then the beat system never broke.

Bhupendra Chaubey: I know for sure that when you were looking after traffic that is when you earned you nick name 'crane Bedi', because no matter who the person was he couldn't escape from your sharp eyes. But the other point, I find it interesting, which you have raised in your book 'I Dare', which is that you have tried to present an alternate model in a sense of what should be the relationship between the person at the top in police with the people. Should the Police Commissioner be someone who should be completely alienated, he is just a hierarchical boss, or should the Police Commissioner be someone around whom the entire police force should end up working? How have you drawn distinctions between these two models?

Kiran Bedi: It is an authoritarian model which is happening today. The other is transformative which transforms the system, which is a consultative, collaborative system. The first one you referred is isolated model that is what happened. There is a breakdown of community-police relationship. Ours was collaborative, community outreach system. People now don't recognise who the Police Commissioner is. Do you know every 9.00 am I was in the police station as a district DCP? I want to know how many district DCPs are in the police stations everyday at 9.00 am, to work with the beat officers. I'm saying some may do it, I salute them, but the point is Delhi as a city, or any city needs everybody, needs every district DPC.

Bhupendra Chaubey: But let me break it down, again to the first point of contact. Even before you go to a police station, in Delhi you have PCR vans, you know police men on motorcycles. What happens if a woman has been harassed, a simple case, a woman has been eve-teased, and the woman goes to that person who is on that motorcycle, not in a PCR police van. What is the ideal way for the policeman to react to the situation?

Kiran Bedi: First of all there has to a trust in the relationship. They got to be working together in peace time only then will the woman come.

Bhupendra Chaubey: So there is a possibility that the woman may not even go there because there is trust deficit.

Kiran Bedi: She won't go because the relationship was not there during the peace time. She will come to you only in crisis. And then she would also be afraid because there is no peace time dialogue. You need to work without crime happening, so when crime happens that person knows who to come to.

Dem. Rep. Accuses GOP of ?Literally? Trying to ?Take Food Out of The Mouths of Hungry Babies?

It looks like Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) has been taking lessons from Vice President Joe Biden. Either that or she has become extraordinarily ?comfortable with hyperbole.

?The Republicans, the disdain that I have seen for poor people, for people who are struggling, like senior citizens on Medicare and Social Security, for low income people and the Women Infant Children (WIC) program,? ?Rep. Schakowsky said during a Friday broadcast of MSNBC?s ?The Ed Show.?

?We saw the Republicans, last week, vote [for] spending cuts that would literally take food out of the mouths of hungry babies,? she added, signaling that she has either a remarkably poor understanding of the word ?literally? or that she?s interested in a permanent spot on MSNBC:

In a political career spanning four decades, Bush, a Republican, also served as a congressman, ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, CIA director, and vice president for two terms under Ronald Reagan.

Hybrid and electric car sales jump 73 percent in 2012

US sales of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric cars should reach 440,000 units in 2012 ? a 73% improvement over 2011 ? according to?market research firm Mintel.

The change hasn't come overnight. Though the first hybrids debuted in the late 1990s, it's taken the public a while to warm up to?green?vehicles. The delay can be attributed to the higher cost of those cars, fear of the technology, and dozens of other factors.

According to market research firm Mintel, however, a shift is underway. Mintel says that U.S. sales of?hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric cars should reach?440,000 units in 2012 -- a 73% improvement over 2011.?

That's in keeping with the strong sales figures we've noted here. Alternative-fuel vehicles are?flying off the lots, and even with?a dip in November sales, automakers stand to move 50,000 electric?cars?this year.?

All eyes on them, Senate leaders seek fiscal deal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senate leaders rushed to assemble a last-ditch agreement to avoid middle-class tax increases and possibly delay steep spending cuts in an urgent attempt to find common ground after weeks of postelection gridlock.

An impatient President Barack Obama pressed top lawmakers to cut a deal before the year-end deadline, even one that falls short of the ambitions he and congressional leaders may once have harbored for a bigger deficit reduction package.

"The hour for immediate action is here. It is now," Obama declared.

Following a White House meeting Friday among Obama and congressional leaders, aides to Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., began racing against the clock for a bipartisan bargain.

The leaders could present legislation to senators as early as Sunday, with a vote possible on Sunday or Monday.

The guest list for the White House meeting included Reid, McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. But the key players were clearly Reid and McConnell, both of whom stayed behind briefly at the White House and huddled with their staffs and Obama's top legislative aide, Rob Nabors, in the West Wing Cabinet Room just outside the Oval Office.

Neither side expected compromise to be easy. However, McConnell and Reid voiced unexpected optimism that they could work toward a deal that could win support in both their camps.

Warned Reid: "Whatever we come up with is going to be imperfect."

Whatever manages to pass in the Senate, with its Democratic majority, would then face a second test in the Republican-controlled House.

Boehner, a Republican speaker who has struggled recently with anti-tax rebels inside his own party, said through an aide that he would await the results of the talks between the Senate and White House. A House vote could come as late as Wednesday, the final full day before a new Congress takes office.

Officials said there was a general understanding that any agreement would block scheduled income tax increases for middle-class earners while letting rates rise at upper-income levels.

Obama was sticking to his campaign call for increases above $250,000 in annual income, even though in recent negotiations he said he could accept $400,000.

The two sides also confronted a divide over estate taxes. Obama favors a higher tax than is currently in effect, but one senior Republican, Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, said he's "totally dead set" against it. Speaking of fellow GOP lawmakers, he said they harbor more opposition to an increase in the estate tax than to letting taxes on income and investments rise at upper levels.

But the estate tax was more likely to be used as a possible bargaining chip that Democrats could give away in exchange for higher rates for top earners and other Obama priorities.

Obama and Democrats want to prevent the expiration of unemployment benefits for about 2 million long-term jobless men and women, and there is widespread sentiment in both parties to shelter doctors from a 27 percent cut in Medicare fees.

Also likely to be included in the negotiations are taxes on dividends and capital gains, both of which are scheduled to rise with the new year. Also the alternative minimum tax, which, if left unchanged, could hit an estimated 28 million households for the first time and mean an average increase of more than $3,000.

The White House has shown increased concern about a possible doubling of milk prices if a farm bill is not passed in the next few days, although it is not clear whether that issue too might be included in the talks.

One Republican who was briefed on the White House meeting said Boehner made it clear he would leave in place spending cuts scheduled to take effect unless alternative savings were included in any compromise to offset them. In previous White House proposals, Obama has suggested finding enough cuts in government spending to put off the steeper cuts for up to six months.

Obama, speaking to reporters following his meeting with the congressional leaders, faulted a system that left crucial decisions to the last minute, a way of governing that he said the public finds "mindboggling."

"Outside of Washington nobody understands how it is that this seems to be a repeat pattern, over and over again," he said.

Still, Obama himself is part of the negotiating process, and his meeting with all four top leaders Friday was the first since Nov. 16. A phone call he placed Wednesday night to McConnell was the first the Republican leader had received from a Democrat on the fiscal talks since Thanksgiving.

Looking to add pressure on negotiators, Obama said he expects Reid to put legislation on the floor to prevent tax increases on the middle class and extend unemployment benefits ? an implicit challenge to Republicans to dare to vote against what polls show is popular.

The start of negotiations in the Senate marked a new endgame for discussions that have moved in fits and starts since the November election.

Boehner refused for weeks to accept any rate increases, and simultaneously accused Obama of skimping on the spending cuts he would support as part of a balanced deal to reduce deficits, remove the threat of spending cuts and prevent the across-the-board tax cuts.

Last week, the Ohio Republican presented a Plan B measure that would have let rates rise on million-dollar earners. That was well above Obama's latest offer, which called for a $400,000 threshold, but more than the speaker's rank and file were willing to accept.

Facing defeat, Boehner scrapped plans for a vote, leaving the economy on track for the cliff that political leaders in both parties had said they could avoid. In the aftermath, Democrats said they doubted any compromise was possible until Boehner has been elected to a second term as speaker when the new Congress convenes Thursday.

Ouya developer console gets an official unboxing, flaunts - Engadget

It's a little early for an Ouya teardown, but Kickstarters who chipped in $699 won't have to wait long to see what the little console is made of -- Ouya's developer hardware is transparent. The console's team decided to cut the inevitable march of unboxing videos off at the neck, offering fans a quick preview of the package it's shipping out to devs. The standard accouterments are there -- the tiny console itself, two prototype controllers with batteries, HDMI and power adapters, plus a micro USB cord and a letter to developers thanking them for their investment and warning them of the early build's bugs. The note also cautions deep-pocketed gamers that the device is built specifically for developer use, and has no games to placate eager couch potatoes. The video shows the console booting up, and even demonstrates how easy it is to open the hardware. Skip on past the break to get a glimpse at what early adopters and developers are getting their hands on.

Hi,

You mean video and audio streaming?

You will need to have an ffmpeg, mp4 box, flvtool2,mencoder and mplayer, ffmpeg-php capable server. You can also look into red5 media server as an option.

Additional items you would need is a reliable flash player like the ones offered by jwplayer and flowmotion.

If you have a limited bandwidth on your hosting account, make sure to have your video metadata injected with flvtool2 (flv files only), for the h264 and mp4 you can move the moov atom in the front of the video, by using mp4box. These tools will allow you to pseudo-stream your contents without translating all the media file size into bandwidth consumptions.

Lastly, you will need to know all of the basics of ffmpeg-php and the basics ffmpeg encoding commands.

You will need to look for a reliable hosting company. This is the hosting company I used for developing video streaming applications.

I think they also have a ready to install FREE video streaming applications e.g. phpmotion, clic bucket, vidiscript and many others.

MORE INFO. NOT RELATED TO YOUR QUESTION
I was one of the developer of the vidiscript open-source version 1.0 to version 1.3, but that is the old version we wrote that is still being distributed by most ffmpeg hosting companies. I was able to released all the bug fixes two years ago 2010 and then it was followed by major fix for php 5.3+ in my last year release.

I wrote version 3.7 of the open source, but got really busy at my schooling, and then I have to trashed bin all of the 3.7 version because I want to write it as a video content management using my own mvc framework with an option of smarty, twig and tinybutstrong template engines. I am still on track for my projected release date by mid 2013. This will be called veedeoo scripts which is an open source.

For first time, the AT&T Performing Arts Center is operating in the black

No wonder they're feeling a bit festive at the AT&T Performing Arts Center ...

Earlier this year the AT&T Performing Arts Center had little good news to stand in the spotlight: A study out of the University of Chicago chastised its founders for spending more than they had on hand, while Standard & Poor?s dropped the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts Foundation?s bond credit rating to BBB-minus. To which the AT&T PAC responded with that old familiar just-you-wait: ?Success does not happen overnight.?

No, perhaps it takes a little more than three years.

For the first time, says AT&T Performing Arts Center president and acting CEO Doug Curtis, the center wrapped up a fiscal year in the black ? up $280,000 in net operational revenues when FY2012 came to a close at July?s end. The center, which released the numbers today following its annual audit, posted an operational loss of $3.3 million for FY2011.

Much of the uptick, Curtis tells The News, is due to ?the commitment we have to look at how we spend every penny to make sure we?re getting the best value for every cent spent. And it has to do with fulfilling the mission our board has set forth, which is to create a gathering place for the community and continue to have an eye ? and this is hard to do when you?re watching every penny ? on the quality of what you do. That?s something we take very seriously.?

Which isn?t to say all the kinks have been worked out: According to the center, its bottom line is still sagging into the red, thanks to ?depreciation, debt service and the transfer of building assets to the city of Dallas,? according to this afternoon?s release. FY2012 still showed a loss of $1.45 million. But that too reveals a possible end to the bleeding: In FY2011, the center posted an overall loss of $7.3 million.

Curtis, the interim CEO who more and more looks like the permanent CEO following the brief tenure of Mark Weinstein, attributes the turnaround to myriad things: a board with little turnover; new staffers charged with amping up the programming and turning up the fund-raising; and more donors willing to kick in more dollars. Which is decidedly good news for an organization still in the midst of raising dough in order to bridge a $40-million gap in its $354-million capital campaign.

?We?ve finally hit a bit of a stride and now have the beginnings of a sustainable business plan, and that?s turned our fundraising around,? he says. ?Donors want to be able to give to an organization doing well financially, and this news will add even more to it. I can?t give you specifics, but in our first several months, both capital and annual fundraising are going very well. And in terms of our reaching into the community we?ve hit our stride there. We?ve got such a diverse array of things we offer to the public. It sounds cliched, but we have something for everybody. To look at what we offer now in terms of programming and not find something you like is getting harder and harder.?

In its release today the AT&T PAC said individual giving more than doubled to $554,000, while corporate donations more than tripled to $130,000. It also didn?t hurt, says Curtis, that Les Mis?rables set a revenue record during its two-week stay at the Winspear Opera House.

?We grossed far more than we ever thought we would, and I think we?ll strive to have one of those kinds of shows every season,? he says, because, sure, who wouldn?t want a record-setter every year? ?People don?t realize what a risk it is when you do a show like this. You never know how well a show will do. But you?ve got to have at least one every year. And, we are only three years old, and being so young we are still learning a lot about the best way to operate this center. We?ve learned enough to know what works in these venues and what doesn?t. We?re getting smarter.?

Given the fact the AT&T PAC?s already halfway into its current fiscal year, it seems fair to ask how the next round of results will look, especially since the city of Dallas will fully fund its $2.5-million obligation to the center. So ??

?The budget we got approved by the board was break-even, and we?re doing everything we can to stay on that course,? Curtis says. ?It?s a constant work-in-progress. It?s something you have to work at every single day, every single week. It?s not easy to do, but our staff is committed to making it happen and achieving it.?

Apple CEO's pay takes big hit vs. record 2011 package

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook's 2012 compensation package of $4.17 million is a huge cut on paper for the top executive of the most valuable U.S. corporation, after a 2011 package fattened by more than $376 million in long-term stock awards.

Cook received the largest single pay package awarded to a company CEO in about a decade when he replaced Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in August last year, shortly before the Silicon Valley legend's death in October 2011.

The maker of the iPhone and iPad made the 2012 compensation disclosures in a regulatory filing on Thursday. Cook, 52, has been with Apple since 1998.

Virtually all of Cook's $376 million stock bonus in 2011 was in awards that vest in two chunks - one in 2016 and the other in 2021. This structure was intended to keep Jobs' longtime lieutenant at the helm for many years, as the value of the stock will depend on how well the company is doing in 2016 and 2021.

Cook, who is credited with masterminding a sprawling but efficient Asian supply chain, has generally received high marks for his first year for shepherding several successful gadget launches, including the iPhone 5.

But he was forced to make a public apology in September after the company launched a mapping service application riddled with glaring geographical errors. The Maps app fiasco contributed to the departure of fellow Apple veteran and software chief Scott Forstall.

In addition, some analysts questioned whether Cook, whose only major new product since taking the helm was a smaller version of the iPad that Jobs propelled into the mainstream in 2010, has the vision to produce the next big product category and sustain historically stellar growth for Apple as global mobile competition intensifies.

"The jury is still out in terms of the job he is doing," said fund manager Tim Ghriskey, whose Solaris Group counts Apple stock as the biggest holding among the approximately $2 billion it manages.

But he added that the company's long-term prospects look strong, particularly if it rolls out oft-rumored television products in the next few years.

As of Thursday's close, Apple shares were almost 37 percent higher than when Cook became CEO 16 months ago. However, since a record-high close of $702.10 on September 19, the stock has fallen almost 27 percent.

Ghriskey said Wall Street remained nervous about the growing popularity of Google Inc's Android phone software, used by global smartphone leader Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, and potential margin pressure from that intensifying competition.

BY THE NUMBERS

In terms of base salary, Cook actually received a 50 percent increase to $1.4 million for 2012, and the same 200 percent non-equity bonus other top Apple executives like CFO Peter Oppenheimer earned, Apple said in the Thursday filing ahead of a February 27 shareholders' meeting.

Cook's 2012 package includes a nonequity bonus of $2.8 million.

Despite the increase, Apple said Cook's target annual cash compensation is "significantly below the median annual cash compensation level for CEOs at peer companies." It also said that Cook will not receive any stock awards for 2012.

Cook's latest compensation package also pales in comparison to his package in 2010, when he was chief operating officer. That package was 14 times higher.

A company spokesman would not comment beyond the filing.

Jobs famously received $1 a year in salary in the three years before he stepped down, though in 2000 he too received a stock option that analysts say was valued at almost $600 million at the time.

Looking beyond Apple, Yahoo Inc's CEO, Marissa Mayer, a former Google Inc high-flyer hired this year to try to turn around the struggling Internet icon, won a pay package worth more than $70 million. [ID:nL1E8LJJB5] Despite her lack of a track record as CEO and Yahoo's tiny size in comparison, her basic pay is comparable to Cook's, with about $1 million in annual salary and up to $2 million in an annual bonus.

Oracle Corp's Larry Ellison, one of the most highly paid U.S. chief executives - and also the world's sixth-richest man, according to Forbes - received total compensation for the year ended May 31, 2012, of $96.2 million - almost all of it in stock options. That compared with $77.6 million in 2011.

According to a study of the Fortune 500 conducted by Forbes this year, CEOs were paid a base salary of $1.1 million in 2011 on average, with the mean annual bonus at $2.4 million and average total compensation - including stock awards - at around $17 million.

Apple shares closed up 0.4 percent at $515.06 on the Nasdaq on Thursday.

Hawaii lieutenant gov. picked to fill Senate seat

HONOLULU (AP) ? Hawaii's lieutenant governor spent time in the morning telling fellow Democrats why he should become the state's next U.S. senator. Hours later, he was hitching a ride to Washington with President Obama to be sworn in as the late Sen. Daniel Inouye's successor.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie appointed Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz to the post Wednesday, going against the dying wishes of Inouye, who wanted U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa to take his place.

Schatz, 40, said his top priorities would be addressing global climate change, preserving federal funds used in Hawaii for things like defense spending and transportation, and getting federal recognition for Native Hawaiians in forming their own government, similar to many Indian tribes across the United States.

Schatz, who ran with Abercrombie for the state's top two offices in 2010, beat out Hanabusa and Esther Kiaaina, a deputy director in the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The three candidates were selected by state Democrats Wednesday morning from a field of 14. The candidates briefly made their cases before the state party's central committee, which handing the three top names to the governor.

"No one can fill Sen. Daniel K. Inouye's shoes, but what we want to do today is find the right person to walk in his footsteps," Schatz told the committee.

"I want to be your senator because I believe Hawaii needs seniority, and we need someone who can build it up over decades and decades. And I pledge to you, if I'm given this opportunity and obligation to serve, I will try to make this my life's work and rebuild the tenure that Hawaii so desperately needs," he said.

The White House said Schatz would fly to Washington Wednesday night with Obama, who was returning from his Hawaii Christmas vacation early as Congress considers what to do about the so-called fiscal cliff.

Schatz could be sworn in as early as Thursday, which would make him Hawaii's senior senator. Hawaii's other senator, Daniel Akaka, is retiring at the end of this Congress after 22 years.

Inouye, by far Hawaii's most influential politician and one of the most respected lawmakers in Washington after serving five decades in the Senate, died last week of respiratory complications at the age of 88. He sent Abercrombie a hand-signed letter dated the day he died, saying he would like Hanabusa to succeed him, calling it his "last wish."

Four days after eulogizing Inouye in the courtyard of the Hawaii Capitol, Abercrombie said he had to consider more than just Inouye's wishes in filling his seat.

"Of course Sen. Inouye's views and his wishes were taken into account fully, but the charge of the central committee, and by extension then myself as governor, was to act in the best interests of the party ... the state and the nation," Abercrombie said.

"The law makes explicitly clear, as do the rules of the Democratic Party, that while everyone's voice is heard and everyone's view is taken into account, nonetheless, no one and nothing is preordained."

Under state law, the successor had to come from the same party as the prior incumbent. An Abercrombie spokeswoman said the governor did not feel any political pressure from within his party to make the choice he made.

"While we are very disappointed that it was not honored, it was the governor's decision to make," Jennifer Sabas, Inouye's chief of staff, said in a statement. "We wish Brian Schatz the best of luck."

Selecting Hanabusa, 61, would have required a special election in Hawaii's 1st Congressional District. Last time that happened, Hanabusa lost to Republican Charles Djou because of a winner-take-all format that split votes between Democrats.

Abercrombie said the possibility of a special election was a factor, as well as Hanabusa's "key position" on the House Armed Services Committee. The governor said she was on her way toward establishing a senior position on that panel, and it's important for Hawaii ? with its four-member delegation ? to establish seniority in both chambers.

Schatz will serve until an election is held in 2014. He said he will run for re-election to try to keep the Senate seat until 2016 ? the end of Inouye's original term ? and would run again for Senate in 2016 if given the chance.

"To the people of Hawaii, I can assure you this: I will give every fiber of my being to doing a good job for the state of Hawaii," Schatz told a news conference in Honolulu. "We have a long and perhaps difficult road ahead of us, but we can succeed if we work together. I understand the magnitude of this obligation and this honor, and I won't let you down."

Hanabusa congratulated Schatz in a statement.

"Having served as chair of the Hawaii Senate Judiciary Committee when the succession law was passed, I fully respect the process and the governor's right to appoint a successor," she said.

Last week, when Abercrombie announced he would not seek the seat himself, his spokeswoman Louise Kim McCoy said Abercrombie intends to make his current post as Hawaii governor the last office of his political career.

Inouye would be "very happy" with the choice, Hawaii Democratic Party chairman Dante Carpenter said. Schatz has less experience than some older politicians in the Senate but he will be building seniority, which is "critical" to the state of Hawaii, he said.

"In the words of Sen. Dan Inouye ? invoked more than once ? seniority in the United States Congress is everything," Carpenter said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had urged Abercrombie to name Inouye's successor before the end of the year. The next Congress begins Jan. 3.

Democratic Rep. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, was elected in November to succeed Akaka.

Schatz is a former state representative and former state Democratic party chairman. He also was a leader of Obama's campaign in Hawaii in 2008.

Even before winning the 2010 general election, Abercrombie expressed faith in Schatz, saying he would put him in charge of attracting more private and federal investment in Hawaii. Other responsibilities included leading the state's clean energy efforts and Asia-Pacific relations.

First in line to replace Schatz as lieutenant governor is Senate President Shan Tsutsui, who said he planned to discuss the prospect with his family before deciding.

First, the good news. Sensex, the Indian benchmark has risen around 25% this year. This makes it one of the most attractive emerging market indices. Are Indian investors then queuing up to buy stocks? Well, far from it. As reported by leading daily, domestic institutions have sold Indian equities worth a record Rs 550 bn in the year so far. And in most of the cases, the selling has been a rather forced one with investors going for redemptions. Thus, even as foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have pumped in record money, domestic investors chose to pull the exit button.

Sad as it may seem, this is not the first of its kind event. Infact, retail investors in India are now notorious for their bad timing. As highlighted by one of India's leading fund managers, Indian investors have almost always wrongly timed their investments into stocks. He further points out that nearly 80-90% money over a cycle comes in when valuations are high. Not just that. Inflows are also hardly seen when P/Es are low and when markets begin to recover.

We would be wrong to blame Indian investors alone for their flawed appraisal of the market. Investors the world over suffer from this tendency. But why would investors commit this same mistake over and over again. The best answer perhaps lies in the realm of psychology.

You see, human brains have been evolved not to embrace danger and uncertainty but run away from it. These skills, while very useful in the hunter gatherer age, have proved to be our undoing in the financial world. For in the financial world, the best opportunities always come when there is fear and uncertainty all around. Not when there is euphoria all around and when the indices are scaling new highs.

Also, we are not very good at calculating compounded growth rates over a long term horizon. We can easily divide or multiply few numbers but to appreciate the enormity of sustained compounded growth is beyond us. Thus, this, coupled with our inability to defer gratification leads us to look at short term gains rather than long term benefits.

These tendencies are so ingrained that most of us find it difficult to break this pattern. Consequently, as the fund manager pointed out, we end up investing at precisely the wrong time. Little wonder then when it comes to investing, research skills do matter. But what matters equally, if not more, is the ability to think long term and also the ability to keep a calm head when there is fear and uncertainty all around.

Do you think it's possible for retail investors to make long term money in stocks? Do share your comments with us or post your views on our Facebook page / Google+ page

01:26 ?Chart of the day
?
What do you think of a firm that grows sales after taking on debt? Well, as long as the debt remains within permissible limits, we should be fine with it, right? But if debt increases at a faster rate than sales, then alarm bells should certainly start ringing. In the same vein, if a country's GDP is growing but needs more and more money to make the growth happen, it is not a healthy sign. As today's chart of the day points out, while India's nominal GDP has grown at a fast clip over the past couple of decades, the money supply in the economy has grown even faster and this is something we should watch out for. Although the situation is not as alarming as in say US, we need to take steps to ensure that our productivity does not suffer. In other words, we should continue to increase our GDP at either the same rate of growth in money supply or higher. Otherwise, there will be inflation to deal with.
In order to achieve its macroeconomic goals, the state has two tools at its disposal. One is monetary policy. And the other one is fiscal policy. While monetary policy is used to control inflation and interest rates in the economy, the fiscal policy is used to increase the aggregate output of the economy. Currently, major central banks across the globe function as independent state entities. For instance, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) operates independent of the Finance Ministry. Finance Minister P Chidambaram has been pressing for the need to ease interest rates to boost the economy. Of course, the burgeoning fiscal deficit is on his mind. But the RBI has refused to relent as inflation continues to remain high. Had the central bank given in to the government's pressures, it would have to sacrifice the returns on the savings of the people. As such, we believe the central bank's independence is important. Otherwise, the government would be tempted to manipulate the monetary tools to its own end.

But a worrying trend is emerging across some economies. For instance, the Bank of Japan is increasingly becoming a vehicle of the Japanese government. The Japanese government appears to be taking away the independence from the central bank to force the direct monetisation of its deficit spending. In other words, the government's fiscal deficit would be paid for by printing money by the Bank of Japan. It has been happening in the US too. The result of all this is that fiscal discipline goes down the drain. Eventually, this would result in high inflation and diminishing purchasing power of consumers.

US$ 1.7 bn bailout. No this is not yet another life support sought by an American bank. Nor is it by a bank or economy in Europe. In fact, the financial sector in India itself may witness a bailout of this sort if things turn for the worst! At least that is the estimate of India Ratings, a subsidiary of Fitch Ratings, quoted by Firstpost. A stress test of Indian banks seems to have opened up a can of worms. The test takes into account economic downturn, exposure to infrastructure sector and concentration to single corporate houses.

And it seems, Indian banks, particularly the PSU banks, could fail miserably if they were to overcome each of the stress. These NPA risks in Indian banking sector is not unknown. Reports have already claimed that the restructured assets sitting on the books of several large PSU banks are ticking time bombs. But the government too is trying to keep the entities afloat by recapitalizing them. What that means is that the depositors of these banks will not be at risk even if the loans eventually become non-recoverable. But as far as shareholder profits are concerned, that will be elusive.

What will India's growth forecast be for the 12th Five Year Plan? The Planning Commission appears to have already revised its estimates once before and now wants to pitch in for 8%. It must be noted that the initial estimate was pegged at 9% before the Commission revised it to 8.2%. And now Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia believes that 8% is more likely. So why the change in estimates? This is to reflect the changes in the global economic environment notably the ongoing recessionary trends in the US and Europe and persistent sluggishness in the domestic market.

Further, for FY13, which would be the first year of the 12th Plan, the growth rate has been estimated at 5.7-5.9%. This is the lowest in the last decade. An uncertain global environment aside, the need of the hour is to bolster growth in the domestic market. The government already has announced a slew of reforms. But has to now get going and focus on actually implementing them if growth has to pick up in the later years of the Five Year Plan.

What does 2013 have in store for you? Well, according to most Americans the US economy is expected to slide into a recession next year. This is whether or not policy makers are able to steer clear of the fiscal cliff. The US political system continues to remain at odds over fiscal reforms. If an agreement isn't reached soon, next year could usher in a series of tax hikes and spend cuts. This is a deadly combination which could very well tip the country into another slowdown.

Seeing the deadlock in the parliament most businesses and households have put their spending plans on hold which could contract the economy. While a decision may not be reached by Jan 1st - economists believe that the government will scramble through and come to a conclusion on how to avoid major tax hikes and address spending cuts.

Meanwhile, after spending the first half of the day in the green, Indian equity markets indices moved lower towards the dotted line and were trading flat at the time of writing. IT stocks were seen exerting the maximum pressure. While most Asian stock markets closed in the positive today, Europe too has opened on a positive note.

This blanket comment implying that retail investor lack sufficient market knowledge is unacceptable. There may be a few such. not all. Some have long term objective . some have short term objective.Depending on that , they may make investments. They may consider compound rate also , while fixing such objectives.Share market, success or failure depends on various factors. may be it is the thing of the past. The Indian retail investor is playing safe and selling at every higher levels. It is the greedy FII factor which is going gung ho and buying at every price level. I hope this time around it will be better to be safe rather than be sorry. Even if the share prices go to crazy levels the Indian retail investor will still be booking profits rather than getting carried away. Like?

I do not agree with your view that retail investors seldom succeed in stock markets. I have been a retail investor for more than 30 years in stock market and have never regretted the decision. My investments have multiplied several times during this period apart from receiving regular dividend income. Like?

very few people know the def on investor let the investors see the dictionary and let them know who is an investor
investing in shares hsould be like stamp collection and once you bois down to a compnay scrip after seeing lot of factors like one anlayses for one daughter to narrow down a good boy
one should go on collecting .nowa days what happens it is for sheer thrill they invest sorry actually trade and loose lot of money since sev youngsters are getting far and much mor ethan they are worth.the brokers also make them invest in so claled commodities and try to teach them as to how to get alot of money by investing in commodities in the end they loose .all investors have now found sebi which is formed for protecting eduating and safe gaurding have actually collided with unscruplous promoters and giving so called consent orders and so on andasking the companies to go for delisting so that they can be outside the purview of sebi and not taking any responsibility in pricing of ipo and allowing the promoters to loot so the investors have got tired loosing money still the investors are preapred to loose but all thier wealth has vanished .if an investor wants to complaint against a compny one has to go to the computer and type and if done they will ask for it in writing and if you call over telephone the so called officer in charge first they will hear all the complaint and after that they inform that you have to go to western regional unit or southern regional unit whoacts like post office .there is absolutely no sense of belonging to anybody in sebi even sebi chief when confronted for balance sheet problem for the non receipt he silently walked away aafter he informs that he will take it up with mca.after 6 months also no action taken even in writing .sebi is getting lot of money from the exchanges rom all investors who trade or invest .silently sebi is amssing money .for a regulator why such ahuge money.so in the end all have lost confidence in the equity market

As compared to earlier periods of 80's and 90', stock market in India has grown into huge proportions And attracted by the returns Stock Market provides , it attracts new set of investors year after year. But making money in stock market depends on how fast the new entrant learns the skills needed for investing and weathers the storm courageously and one who does will be rewarded handsomely. I have lost money in stock market but learnt lessons and modified my investment plans and reaped benefits.I am holding a pharma company since 1994 and which is recently included in the Index and have seen the initial investment grow manifold. A plastic furniture manufacture has given me multiple returns in the last 16 years. I invest in the stock market with optimism. And retail investors voice is not heard in the market. It should not be a concern. A Sachin , a Rahul Dravid , A Ricky,A Kallis, an Imran ,a Wasim ,a Clarke,a Lara, a Laxman , a Cook,a Walsh, a Shane ,a Waugh having the skills and techniques, undeterred by one or two failures here and there ,adopt to the various playing conditions and come out with shining colours. The market was languishing in the region of 15000 to 17000 for the major part of the year. It has reached 19000+ levels only of late. The upside from here is doubtful given the domestic and global conditions. Therefore it is perfectly logical to encash the holdings when the going is still good.
Once the market goes down again the cash can be re-invested in the market. The discerning investor has
enough knowledge to take the right decision. Besides there is a lot of data available, now based on which one can decide on the course of action.

Indian Retail Investors have lost confidence in share market because 1) Markets are ruled by whims and fancies of FIIs and Mutual Funds who gamble with others' money 2) We can not trust the Government because of their unstable policies which in turn affect the corporate functioning. 3) Entry of F&Os in the trading environment which has changed the climate from 'investments' to GAMBLING. 4) Unscrupulous management of the companies who have swindled the corporate wealth to their personal gains through fraudulent transactions including insider trading. 5) Inflated market prices of various scrips which do not deserve entry for 'investment' due to unsatisfactory fundamental principles.
